Implementation Checklist for Visual Builder Studio

1. Introduction

Visual Builder Studio (VB Studio) is a robust application development platform that helps your team effectively plan and manage work throughout all stages of the application development lifecycle: design, build, test, and deploy. This checklist provides steps on how to set up VB Studio for developing visual applications.

2. Pre-requisites

Before you start setting up VB Studio, ensure you have the following:

  • Required Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) roles and permissions.
  • Access to Oracle Cloud Account.
  • Properly configured OCI compartments and resources.

3. Setting Up Visual Builder Studio

3.1 Create the VB Studio Instance

  1. Get the Right Roles Ensure you have the necessary identity domain roles: Identity Domain Administrator or User Administrator DCS_INSTANCE_ENTITLEMENT_ADMINISTRATOR DEVELOPER_ADMINISTRATOR OCI_Administrator
  2. Create an OCI Compartment Navigate to the OCI console. Create a compartment to host VB Studio’s Compute and Storage instances.
  3. Create the VB Studio Instance Go to the Oracle Cloud Home Page. Navigate to Developer Services and select Visual Builder Studio. Click Create Instance and fill in the required details. Click Create Visual Builder Studio.

3.2 Configure OCI Resources for CI/CD

  1. Set Up the OCI Connection Navigate to Organization > OCI Account in VB Studio. Click Connect and fill in the required OCID values, user details, and storage namespace.
  2. Validate the OCI Connection Validate the connection details and click Save.

3.3 Access VB Studio from the Oracle Cloud Home Page

  1. Sign in to Oracle Cloud.
  2. Navigate to Developer Services and select Visual Builder Studio.
  3. Click on the VB Studio instance name.
  4. On the Instance Details page, click Service Console.

4. Set Up VB Studio for Developing Visual Applications

4.1 Get Access to Visual Builder Instances

  1. Create a Visual Builder Service Instance if not already available.
  2. Add an IDCS User to Your Cloud Account and assign the user a Visual Builder role.

4.2 Create and Set Up a Project for Development

  1. Create a Project On the Organization page, click + Create. Enter a unique name and description for the project. Select the Visual Application project template.
  2. Configure the Deployment Job In the Deployment Job settings, specify credentials to connect to the target development instance.
  3. Run the Pipeline Manually Verify your credentials by running the development pipeline.
  4. View the Deployed Visual Application Check the deployed applications to ensure they are correctly configured.
  5. Add Users to the Project Invite team members to join the project and assign appropriate roles.

4.3 Optional Configurations

  1. Configure the Packaging Job Set up a job to package the visual application for deployment.
  2. Set Merge Restrictions on the Main Branch Configure branch restrictions and approval processes for merge requests.

5. Develop and Deploy Your Application

  1. Develop Your Application Utilize VB Studio’s tools such as the page editor, components palette, and structure view to build visual applications.
  2. Set Up Additional Deployment Instances For deploying to additional Visual Builder instances (production, QA), create separate VB Studio environments.
  3. Set Up the Project to Deploy for Production Create a production branch and configure production build and deployment jobs.
  4. Run the Pipeline Execute the pipeline to automate the build, test, and deployment process.

6. Manage the VB Studio Instance

  1. Change the CI/CD Compartment Update the OCI compartment if necessary.
  2. Switch to the Built-In Free Account Configure VB Studio to use the built-in free account for certain operations.
  3. Validate the OCI Connection Regularly check and validate the OCI connection settings.
  4. Manage Instance Tags and Policies Set tags and write IAM policies to control access to VB Studio.

By following these steps, you can effectively set up and manage Oracle Visual Builder Studio to develop, deploy, and maintain visual applications in your organization.
