Implement FAST! Anger & Depression / Being & Doing
Something came up yesterday that needed repair.
It’s so important that I feel I must share it with you today.
What was it that needed repair? (or perhaps an overhaul?)
?
--> My thinking.
?
I had gotten quite angry over something that didn’t really matter.
As my son went to ball practice, I sat in the car and journaled and found the lie.
Anger comes from fear.
-- >Fear is based on the thought that something of value may be lost.
--> Anger is losing that thing of value.
-- > What am I valuing when I am criticized and get upset?
I hate the criticism because it is revealing an open wound,
Something I have accepted or rather haven’t accepted about myself,
Something that I don’t like and haven’t dealt with.
Then I thought about things that made?me happy: (winning, appreciation, etc.)
And I realized I had believed this lie about myself.
-- > “If I don’t achieve, I’m worth LESS.”
I realized this thinking can lead to depression.
And depression isn’t a good thing, because self-focus and sadness can quickly become a self-fulfilling prophecy filled with negativity and a victim mentality.
And yet I realized I was not alone.
Famous celebrities who seemingly had everything sometimes face a tragic end.
Whitney Houston, Robin Williams, Matthew Perry.
?
So, I decided to change my thinking and reverse it ...
Which then reminded me of “Being Before Doing.”
In my early 20s, I had a one-hour session with two career counselors.
The men drew 4 different parts of my life and tried to connect them together, showing what I should try to find in a career.
The one thing they really tried to emphasize was “Being Before Doing.”
A friend of mine had set me up with these two counselors, and I did not have to pay. Their expertise and generosity didn’t dawn on me until I realized who one of them was.
I had a small card collection in 6th grade. When I heard Mr. Beckett mentioned statistics and his work, I realized I would not forget this day.
But Months Passed. Years Passed.
And I had no clue what “Being Before Doing” meant.
But then I remembered it yesterday and again in when I wrote this action step.
?
ACTION STEP:
Change the belief, “If I don’t achieve, I’m worth LESS.”
TO
"I’m priceless.
I can continue to work hard.
Without being depressed
Because I know my worth is based on who I am, not what I do.
And because I know who I am, I will work hard."
?
But this is not just about how you think about yourself.
It is also helps when prioritizing goals and relationships.
But more on that next week . . .
?
P.S.
You don’t fail in life.
You just get to keep re-doing lessons until either you master them or die.
?
Last week, my goal was …
to write down 10 things I needed to do
post them next to my “I am” identity statements in my bathroom
read them aloud each day, and
get to work on them.
?
This week I get to re-do this assignment.
