Imperfectly Perfect

"Perhaps it is our imperfections that make us so perfect for one another". - Jane Austen

‘Imperfectly Perfect’ describes something or someone as beautiful, desirable or acceptable despite its imperfections.? It is an acknowledgement and an understanding that perfection is an ideal concept that is rarely seen or achieved.? Something 'imperfectly perfect' has a certain character, authenticity or appeal precisely because it is not entirely perfect and yet everything seems exactly right and cannot be improved upon without disturbing something else.

Despite knowing this, we all chase perfection in our lives.? We have been conditioned to do it. Got you thinking?? We chase it because in our perceived rational world we don’t have an alternative.?? If you don’t chase perfection, what will you do??

"Perfectionism is a dangerous state of mind in an imperfect world." – Robert Hillyer

No wonder, in a corporate environment the most common question for a senior person is asking for feedback to help you find your imperfections as that gives you a chance to improve.? Despite all your imperfections, the senior person never disappoints. You always come out from such meetings thinking good about yourself and reinforcing your own sense of perfection.? Unfortunately, there just so much truth in that thinking and you are missing the opportunity of a lifetime. How so?

Chasing those imperfections definitely helps you improve yourself but only till a point.? Then the law of diminishing returns kicks in.? Any further effort into improving your imperfections does not give you added advantage as the improvement is very marginal and not worth the effort. Flummoxed?

Weren't you hired for being 'imperfectly perfect'.? If so, then why are you are so keen to always understand what’s imperfect?? Do you even know what makes you perfect? Most of us will balk at articulating what makes us so good. It’s unfortunate but true that the vast majority just sees the first part of the 'imperfectly perfect equation'.? How do you know that in just trying to improve your imperfections you are not disturbing that 'imperfectly perfect' you! ?

Never forget it is our imperfections that make us so 'imperfectly perfect'. But that does not mean we don’t need to change!? As Winston Churchill said

“To improve is to change, to be perfect is to change often”

An amazing reminder. I remembered in first experience our senior most leader came and told us- It's okay if we have failures or made mistakes. Because only then we continously learn. Day we stop making mistakes is the day we stop learning. So yes the day we stop being imperfect is the day we stop evolving.

Interesting take on “imperfect” perfections! Barring the mathematical interpretations, perfection is heavily based on perspective - a changing dimension. The quest to interpret and fix this perspective imperfection is what keeps us driven.

Beautifully crafted and exquisite words. After putting in years of experience in corporate and in IT field, unless we achieve perfectionism, the software piece is not going to work, and then we as humans imbibe perfectionism to be first time right to avoid the pain of rework.? Looks like awareness is the key here to preserve our human self, which can remain imperfectly perfect!!! and ever evolving...
