Imperfect Parents; Conscientious Parenting

Imperfect Parents; Conscientious Parenting

Our conversation while driving the human child for her swim on Monday this week.

Me: I have behaved badly with you, and for that I am sorry. Deeply sorry.

She: That’s ok Mom. It happens sometimes. There is a solution though.

Me: Tell me. I want to ensure my bad behavior doesn’t get repeated.

She: When you are angry for whatever reason, just excuse yourself. Go to your room, bang your door if you must;  scream and do whatever you have to take your frustrations out. Take as much time as you want. Only come out when you are ready.

Me: Wow! That’s super fab! I am going to do it.

She: Thank you, Mom. The question is when will you start?!

Me: Starting right now, baby girl!

Despite our very best efforts the reality of modern-day parenting often feels more daunting and discouraging than gentle, or conscious. How many parents have felt this way?

To me conscientious parenting does not meant I have to get tangled up in a crazy web of self-doubt and guilt. Conscientious parenting is not supposed to be idealistic. It’s, to me, about being aware, being honest, and being held accountable.

Yup, introspection and course-correction are something one should always do in every sphere of life, so to not only self improve but also set right examples for others.

Well said!

The myth of the perfect parent is as damaging as the myth of the perfect professional in any sphere. We all need compassion (for self and others), while remaining open to our own learning and development.
