Dear Friends, Brothers & Sisters!
It is our pleasure to announce the release of next book in the series of earlier publications titled “Imperatives for Energy Security”
Oil and gas Sector has been a subject of intense debate over a period of time, wherein it has been under pressure with respect to the Environmental concerns associated with the same. It is true therefore, that various measures across the globe are being adopted to challenge the Oil and Gas sector with alternative disruptive technologies. A lot of work in Renewables, Green Hydrogen, Electric Vehicles, Nuclear and Geothermal technologies have been in the fore. While all these segments of energy supplementing initiatives are great, and are slowly making way, yet the dominance of the Oil and gas Segment to serve the engines of the economy remains prominent and somewhat unchallenged!
India as a major country has been an example of a Nation trying to establish balance and equity with the challenges associated with the energy balance associated with the Economy. It is no secret, that India is heavily dependent upon energy import, particularly the fossil fuels, which compound pressure on the economy, as a very significant component of the finances have to be spent towards importing Oil and Gas to keep the engines of the economy lubricated. It is pressures exerted from the Foreign Exchange outgo, that Renewables led by Solar Energy, Biomass and now Green Hydrogen have been new areas, on which, the emphasis of the Government has been strong. Coal is another area which is being now looked at more carefully for producing chemicals and as a fossil fuel supplement to the energy demands. Also it could vitally aid in curbing significant outgo of foreign exchange, to cater to the energy needs of the Country. While all these efforts are exemplary and certainly will gradually supplement the energy basket, it is evident, that the burgeoning energy demands of the country are such, that the dependence on the fossil fuels are not to go anywhere, anytime soon.? Close on the heels of the energy requirements of the country, is the growing need of Petrochemicals, which in recent times has witnessed asymptotic growth.
This book is prompted out of the need of optimizing the existing Oil and Gas Infrastructure of the country, to enable it to be utilized effectively, such that, the last drop of the crude oil is valorized for realizing value. Integration in this aspect therefore, emerges as the key word. While the Indian Oil and Gas has emerged and developed over a period of time, its growth has been somewhat mixed. In the pre-1991 era, the Oil and Gas facilities were small and perhaps uneconomical, designed essentially to meet the local demand requirements of fuels pan India. Post- 1991, India has witnessed Speed, Scale and Economy, were the core around which the Industry developed and soon spread out its tentacles across India, both in terms of scale and the highest possible valorization of the intrinsic value in the Hydrocarbon molecule. This continues to be work in progress, in the need, not only to augment the burgeoning requirements of the transportation fuels, but also to develop significant capacity both in the conventional Polymer segment, but also in niche petrochemicals.???
It would be a fair acknowledgement of the fact, that this book is a result of the vast response and requests from the readers to develop a practical handbook of sorts led significantly by case studies to establish, synergy, equilibrium, optimization, minimization of energy import, gas integration to Refineries, maximization of petrochemicals and many more.
The book therefore, indulges in providing a broad perspective of the Hydrocarbon segment and the growing needs of providing a wide a variety of Petro products and Petrochemicals including niche Petrochemicals to the vast populace of the country. It enables a clearer understanding of Refinery Complexity, Bottoms Upgradation and the need to integrate the Refineries with Gas for highest valorization of products from streams. It also indulges in examining the Petrochemical Integration to Refineries, to recommend strongly the need for conceiving new Complexes as Integrated ones and integrate the existing ones to become larger, optimal and more flexible. In fact, Flexibility is the key word prevailing as a central theme in the book. Since the complexes associated with Hydrocarbon facilities are highly Capital and Technology intensive, it is important that Economies of Scale remains the basic consideration in developing concepts and strategies to integrate the various facilities across the country for their best possible utilization.
As was desired by the readers the book is sprinkled with case studies. All the work is practical, innovative, constructive and relevant, in terms of enhancing the energy security of the country. All the case studies have been presented simply with Techno Economic Analysis to provide a deeper and a more practical insight to the various propositions. It is reckoned that the readers should enjoy reading, as to how Indian Refineries and Gas Grids should be integrated to yield highest possible value for enhancing energy security of the country. The idea behind most of the studies is to optimize the existing facilities and enhance product value without the need for additional feedstock procurement. This is the key!
The Book also indulges in examining Biofuels, Green Hydrogen and integration of the same to existing /new facilities. Water, Power and steam along with Co2 capture for valorization have been expansively dealt in the book.
This book is the culmination of a lot of work carried out in the period 2016-2020 wherein variety of the studies were carried out widely circulated cross in various power circles.?? COVID and thereafter a few other issues came in the way of reaching out to our readers and therefore, there has been delay in putting out this work in public. We sincerely regret the delay in bringing out this book which has been continuously implored upon, by our friends, colleagues and the reading fraternity. We hope, that the material herein, should make interesting and informative reading, and perhaps, help in compensating for the hiatus that occurred in reaching out to you for reasons beyond our control!
Energy Security remains one of the favorite topic of debate and discussion in almost all policy forums. And these days, the debate has become more intense as the Environmental pressures have begun to come to the fore. This book is a humble attempt to address some of the energy security related issues which are a source of worry and concern for the country. It is only with this concern in mind that we have looked at Coal gasification as a major source of energy which needs to be considered strongly, in Nation’s like ours, where the import dependence of Energy is high, while the abundance of coal as a critical energy source remains rather ineffectively utilized in the country. A healthy debate on this is necessary and we are glad that some forward movement on this important subject is already taking pace now.?
We hope the book with ruffle some feathers, and now that the matter would be in public domain, we are hopeful, that some of the ides would possibly reach to the powers that be. It is the Nation that matters, and we are of the opinion that when it comes to the Nation, the companies and the perfunctory boundaries between them must collapse, to address a larger goal.
The paperback version of this book is available on multiple platforms and links for the same is as below:

9 个月What I don't like about fossil fuel is it gives autocratic and unchecked powers to those countries Someone has rightly said World citizens are funding for their and their children's grave by paying to those countries for oil & gas
