Peace is not merely a desirable state of being; it is an absolute necessity for the existence of our world and the survival of humanity. The Quran, the holy scripture of Islam, emphasizes the paramount importance of peace as a guiding principle for human life. This article explores the Quranic perspective on why peace is a fundamental requirement for the world's continuation and humanity's survival, drawing upon relevant Quranic verses.
In the Quran, Allah emphasizes the sanctity of human life, stating, "And whoever saves one [life]—it is as if he had saved mankind entirely" (Quran 5:32). This verse underscores the idea that preserving human life is of the utmost importance. Peace is the foundation upon which the protection of life is built. In times of conflict and violence, innocent lives are lost, communities are shattered, and the fabric of society is torn apart. The absence of peace jeopardizes human existence and hinders the progress of civilization.
The Quran promotes justice and equity as integral components of a peaceful society. It declares, "O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness" (Quran 5:8). Peaceful coexistence is impossible without justice, and justice is unattainable without peace. In a world devoid of peace, oppression thrives, leading to social unrest and discord.
The Quranic concept of peace extends beyond the absence of conflict to encompass general well-being. Allah says, "And He it is who has made the earth subservient to you; so traverse in its tracks and partake of the sustenance which He has provided" (Quran 67:15). Peace allows for the conditions necessary for human flourishing and development, such as access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. In an environment characterized by turmoil, these fundamental elements are compromised, impeding humanity's progress.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of responsible stewardship of the environment, stating, "It is He who has made for you the earth as a bed and made for you upon it roads that you might be guided, and made for you from [the] mountains shelters and made for you garments. Thus does He complete His favor upon you that you might submit" (Quran 16:15). Peace contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing the destructive impact of conflicts, which often lead to pollution, resource depletion, and habitat destruction.
The Quran promotes peaceful coexistence not only within the Muslim community but also with people of other faiths. It says, "And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, 'We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him'" (Quran 29:46). Peace fosters interfaith dialogue, understanding, and cooperation, which are vital for global harmony.
Conclusion
In the Quran, peace is not merely a lofty ideal; it is a fundamental requirement for the existence of the world and the survival of humanity. The preservation of human life, the promotion of justice, the facilitation of human flourishing, responsible environmental stewardship, and interfaith harmony are all intertwined with the concept of peace. To secure our world's existence and ensure humanity's survival, it is imperative that we heed the Quranic wisdom and strive for peace in all aspects of our lives. As Allah states in the Quran, "And Allah invites to the Home of Peace and guides whom He wills to a straight path" (Quran 10:25).
