Impending Alarm Panel Recall

SDM broke the news of a massive failure by UL that will result in the recall of millions (or likely tens of millions) of alarm panels manufactured over the past 20 years by the largest players in the alarm industry. See link - SDM Article Watch the videos to understand the gravity of the non-compliance issues. The article also has a copy of the complaint filed with the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) that mandates recalls. It is worth reading. Here are a couple CPSC recalls of fire panels that have already happened in the past.

Notifier Panel

Gamewell Panel

Gamewell was recalled because "When configured in a certain way, the panels can become non-responsive and connected detectors in the area can fail to detect and respond to an alarm." As the videos prove, this is the certainly the case for 10s of millions of panels installed today. There has already been loss of life for the issues currently under investigation. The bottom line is that UL has blood on their hands and we need a solution to address their failure.

This is an old recall. A majority of these panels have had a firmware upgrade that fixed this issue. There was also an issue with the 320/640 panel if it lost ac power and the batteries failed, the cpu would lock up. This was also fixed with a firmware update.
