Impacts of Flood on the Kenyan Economy
Global urbanization, population, and development trends combined with climate change drive rapid increases in flood-related disaster losses. Floods are one of the major sources of anthropological and ecological destruction. It affects the socio-economic conditions, worsens public health, generates unemployment, damages the ecosystem,?etc.?(Allaire, 2018;?Parida, 2019). Over the years, the intensification of land use and movement into vulnerable areas has further increased exposure to climatic shocks, especially in lowlands locations such as major rivers and areas prone to flash flooding. In the case of Kenya, land use change has drastically altered the landscape.
These floods not only impact the Counties economy but also have had a devastating impact on the Kenyan Economy. Many sectors (automotive, agriculture, and tourism) are or will very soon report significant disruptions. Due to these greater losses, there should be a sense of urgency for affected Counties and the National governing agencies to implement better solutions.

To build resilient infrastructure in Kenya, climate-sensitive policies, legislation, and infrastructure development plans must be developed to address the growing risks arising from weather-related events. Priority actions include adopting resilience engineering into the infrastructure planning, development, and maintenance based on appropriate building standards and codes. Enforcing and strengthening the adoption of the new building codes and standards can significantly reduce the effects of floods on infrastructure. Proper choice of location for infrastructure coupled with the use of climate-based data to inform the choice of climate-resistant materials should be considered when planning and developing infrastructure.
