Impact of Typhoon Yagi
On 8 September, Typhoon Yagi caused severe flooding and landslides, affecting?nearly 890,000 people and killing 380 across?central, eastern, and southeastern regions in Myanmar. As the situation continues to evolve and affected areas remain difficult to access, the number of those affected and dead are expected to rise. Prior to the flooding, 18.6 million people were in need of humanitarian assistance across the country.
The typhoon has affected nearly half of the country. Impacts were particularly severe in the northeastern, home to 19 million people (around 20% of the total population). By 16 September, the typhoon and subsequent floods and landslides had killed nearly 300 people. Humanitarian needs are likely to be high among marginalised rural communities and ethnic minorities.
