In an age where social media reigns supreme, travel influencers have become modern-day explorers, guiding millions with curated snapshots of paradise. But behind the glossy images lies growing frustration among locals and fellow travellers. Here’s a deep dive into 10 behaviours driving others crazy and what can be done about it.
1. Blocking Scenic Views for Photos
Ever tried to enjoy a breathtaking view, only to find it obstructed by someone posing for the perfect shot? Travel influencers often set up elaborate photo shoots in popular spots, leaving other visitors struggling to glimpse the natural beauty. This habit not only affects others' experiences but also risks damaging delicate ecosystems.
2. Ignoring Local Etiquette
Every destination has its own set of cultural norms. Many influencers overlook these customs, whether it's dressing inappropriately in sacred places or disregarding local traditions. This lack of respect can lead to tension and tarnish travellers' reputations as a whole.
3. Overcrowding Popular Spots
The quest for that viral photo often results in overcrowding at popular spots. Influencers may draw large crowds, creating congestion that diminishes enjoyment for everyone and puts undue pressure on local resources.
4. Trespassing for the Perfect Shot
Some influencers trespass on private or restricted areas in pursuit of the perfect shot. This not only violates property rights but also can be dangerous for the influencer and the environment.
5. Using Drones in No-Fly Zones
Drones can capture stunning footage, but many influencers ignore regulations, flying drones in no-fly zones. This can disturb wildlife, invade privacy, and even cause accidents.
6. Littering and Leaving Behind Props
The chase for an Instagram-worthy photo often involves setting up elaborate scenes with props. Unfortunately, some influencers leave these items behind, contributing to litter and harming natural habitats.
7. Staging Inauthentic Experiences
Staged experiences might look great on social media but often fail to represent a location's true essence. This can mislead future travellers and lead to unrealistic expectations, diminishing the genuine local experience.
8. Being Loud and Disruptive
In their quest to capture the perfect content, some influencers become loud and disruptive, disturbing the peace of other visitors. This behaviour can spoil the experience for those seeking a serene getaway.

9. Not Supporting Local Businesses
Influencers often focus on picturesque spots, neglecting to support local businesses. By not engaging with the community, they miss out on contributing to the local economy and preserving the destination's cultural integrity.
10. Endangering Themselves and Others
From climbing dangerous structures to venturing into risky areas for a photo, some influencers put themselves and others at risk. Such reckless behaviour can lead to accidents and harm the environment.
A Disturbing Encounter: The Reality Behind the Glamour
On a recent cruise, my husband and I witnessed influencers at the front of the queue, loudly boasting about getting the trip for free. This blatant disregard for courtesy highlighted a growing sense of entitlement among some influencers, further eroding their potential positive impact.
Fostering a Better Travel Experience
The habits of a few can impact the perception of travel influencers as a whole. Here are a few ways influencers can be more responsible:
- Respect Local Customs: Research and adhere to cultural norms.
- Prioritise Safety: Ensure all activities are safe, permissible, and sustainable.
- Support Local Economy: Engage with local businesses and craftspeople.
- Be Considerate: Avoid obstructing views and be mindful of other visitors.
- Promote Authenticity: Share genuine experiences rather than staged ones.
As a professional travel expert, I take my work very seriously. My fellow PTEs (Professional Travel Experts) and I travel extensively, acquiring information that isn't always available on hotel or tourist board websites. We are the influencers in our own businesses because we see destinations for real, warts and all, not just by manipulating content for social media.
Imagine if I sent my clients to a destination based on a travel influencer's social media content, and it didn’t live up to what they’d seen on Instagram? My credibility would be in tatters. I always manage my clients' expectations.

As a seasoned traveler, I strongly recommend personalized travel plans that meet individual preferences while also respecting and highlighting the local culture. This approach not only enhances the visitor's experience but also promotes sustainable tourism by involving local businesses and artisans. By opting to immerse ourselves fully with our destinations, we create meaningful connections and foster mutual respect, which are the foundations of truly transformative travel experiences.

8 个月No7 & No10 - I had the ‘pleasure’ to spend a night at the ‘interesting’ Giraffe Manor in Kenya last year where I encountered influencers whose activities ticked both both these issues. Individuals with no self-awareness, or duty to their surroundings. Giraffe Manor welcomes the publicity these people court and the reach they deliver. Giraffe rehabilitation is the positive output of Giraffe Manor but the circus that is the daily routine there makes anyone with any sense of goodness feel extremely uneasy. Unfortunately the majority were the influencer type and couldn’t care less for the environment they found themselves in. I couldn’t wait to move on and see the real Kenya.. and no, we didn’t touch or feed a single giraffe during our stay. Amanda Bailey
