There's a saying that "hurt" people "hurt" people! I know it sounds cliche, but it's so true, and the more I move about the country and interact with others, the more I see disrespectful tones in written and verbal communication and body language. I wear many hats daily as a healthcare leader, speaker, author, woman, wife, mother, grandmother, granddaughter, aunt, friend, sister, cousin, niece, and so on. The more I actively listen, the more disheartened I become. I've seen situations escalate quickly without a deliberate pause because individuals fail to monitor their emotions.
Regardless of how technology advances, communication is the foundation of interaction in any organization or social setting. The tone used in communication—whether written, verbal, or through body language—plays a crucial role in shaping the atmosphere and culture of that environment. When the tone is harmful or inappropriate, it can create a toxic environment, leading to decreased morale, increased stress, and a breakdown in collaboration and productivity.?
Every week, I learn about a toxic workplace situation in which communication causes bystanders to experience vicarious trauma. In one recent case, an employee experienced thyroid problems as a result of workplace bullying. According to Healthline, stress is a word that seems all too common in today’s society. Not only can chronic stress wreak havoc on your overall health and well-being, but it can affect your thyroid, too. I have personally witnessed two situations
This article explores how different tone forms can contribute to a toxic environment and provides strategies for fostering positive communication.
Written Communication
Written communication, including emails, memos, and text messages, is a prevalent mode of interaction in today's digital age. However, the tone in written communication can be easily misunderstood due to the lack of vocal and visual cues. A simple phone call can easily prevent a situation from escalating to an unhealthy state.
Verbal Communication
Verbal communication includes face-to-face conversations, phone calls, and video conferences. The tone of voice—encompassing pitch, volume, and pace—significantly influences how messages are received.
Body Language
Body language is a non-verbal form of communication that includes gestures, facial expressions, posture, and eye contact. It often conveys more than words alone and can reinforce or contradict the spoken message.
Organizations and individuals can create a more harmonious, productive, and positive environment by paying attention to the tone in written, verbal, and body language communication. This, in turn, enhances collaboration, reduces stress, and fosters a culture of mutual respect and understanding.
