Impact Players versus Impact Team

By this time tomorrow (Sunday) we would know which franchise won the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 championship. There is little doubt that the two most deserving teams have qualified as the finalists and the team that played the better cricket during those three hours on the Sunday evening would win the championship.
In my head I was rooting for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) since the beginning of the championship. I am a resident of Bangalore after all, and how can I not support a team that plays King Kohli!
But in my heart, subconsciously, I was supporting Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all along. Being a staunch admirer of MS Dhoni is part of the reason, no doubt. But there must be something more than that behind my dilemma. What it could be? I was trying to find out the answer. I think I got the answer last Tuesday, when, defending a modest total of 172 runs, CSK literally choked Gujarat Titans (GT) - arguably the best team in the championship. Even the prince of Indian Cricket - Shubman Gill, could not do much.
None of the CSK team figure in the list of top three wicket takers. None figure among the top three run scorers either. None figure among the impact wickets, nor among the impact runs. There is no king, no prince in the team. Only soldiers, led by an unassuming leader on the field.
The top three wicket takers and the topmost run scorer in the championship are from one single team – The GT. No wonder that team finished at the top during the league stage. Three of the six impact players are from the same team. But impact players can also succumb when they get choked by an impact team – the CSK team.

So finals will be a game of several impact players versus a single impact team.
