IMPACT
Within many of the editions of my Instant Funding newsletter, I have talked about ‘impact.’
?As an expert, student, instructor, and funding seeker, I consider the concept of ‘impact’ to be essential.
?When investor candidates use a single metric or return on investment to evaluate and choose small business investment opportunities, it becomes almost impossible for any small business to stand out and differentiate itself from everyone else seeking funding.
?The most common additional factor a small business may add to the selection equation is impact. Adding impact as a factor to the investment decision-making process is like achieving depth perception by adding a new perspective.
?Impact has so many definitions that it is difficult to work with. My preferred definition is “have a strong effect on someone or something.” Investor candidates commonly, consciously or unconsciously, look for impact.
?How do you measure impact? This is a great challenge. Many things can be measured, including return on investment. When raising funding, the only metrics that matter are those that matter to the investor.
?Understanding that ‘He who holds the gold makes the rules’ simply states that a small business must know its customers when raising funding. Rule #18 in Prepare for Impact [see below} states: “The more you know about what customers are trying to accomplish, what their challenges are, and embrace customer success as your own success, the more effective you can be in orchestrating value around your deliverables…”.
?When discussing return on investment, the question should not be ‘how much’ or ‘how high,’ but what the investor intends to do with the money when receiving it.

·?????? Buy a new boat?
?When talking about impact, the question should be who:
·?????? The investor?
·?????? The investor’s family?
·?????? The investor’s community?
·?????? The world?
?If a small business does not know what any investor candidates care about, they commonly make a generic offer that is inadequate to attract any funding.
?If a small business does not know which investor candidates with whom they may best match, they commonly pitch to everyone, resulting in a waste of their time and money.

?Norman Cousins was an American political journalist, author, professor, and?world peace?advocate.
?This quotation can be readily modified by substituting the word ‘impact’ for ‘consequences.’ By understanding the goals of an investor candidate and framing the offer of a small business to achieve the desired consequences of the investor candidate, it is possible to both (1) avoid investor candidates that will never invest and (2) within the capabilities of the small business to frame an outcome that will be a win-win for both the investor candidate and the small business.
