New Canada Human Rights Bill S-211

If your company has operations in Canada it is possible that the new Canadian human rights law may impact your supply chain.

Just passed, the Fighting Against Forced Labor and Child Labor in Supply Chains Act requires certain companies to report on what they are doing to reduce and eliminate any sort of forced labor throughout their supply chains.?

The bill is expected to go into effect on January 1, 2024, and applies to companies that do business in Canada as well as those who are based elsewhere but import goods or services into Canada.

One of the most relevant requirements of the new bill is an annual report that outlines the steps taken to prevent and reduce risk regarding forced and child labor. The first report is due as early as May 31, 2024, meaning that certain companies will likely be required to begin preparing this year to meet the first reporting deadline.

Uplift works with clients across ESG issues, including using our extensive expertise in human rights due diligence and forced labor compliance to help companies work through these issues.?

Beyond SEC Climate Disclosure: The Proposed EU Due Diligence Rule

The EU has proposed a new rule on corporate sustainability due diligence that would require large companies operating in the EU to monitor their value chains for environmental and human rights risks.

This proposed rule would go beyond the proposed SEC climate disclosure rule and could hold companies liable for violations occurring at any point within their value chains.

Should this EU due diligence proposal be adopted in its current form, companies could be required to closely monitor their supply chains to integrate global sustainability and ethical standards into their business practices.

“As regulations around the world become more stringent, companies that do not prioritize these issues could face significant financial and reputational damage.”

With this and other regulations progressing across the globe, companies increasingly need to proactively address these issues to stay ahead of the curve and position themselves better on sustainability.
