The Impact of Emotional States on Physical Well-being: Insights By Jemila Hamid, Physiotherapist & General Manager @AWIB Ethiopia

Balancing

Our emotional state has a profound effect on our physical well-being. The body, mind, emotions, and spirit are all interconnected, creating a delicate balance that is critical to maintaining overall health. When in harmony, these four elements allow us to function at our best—mentally, physically, and emotionally. However, when one element is out of balance, it can ripple through the others, impacting our overall health.

Understanding the relationship between our emotions and our physical state, and using this knowledge to influence positive change in our lives & have control over our bodies, is crucial for long-term health and wellness.

our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual bodies work in harmony to keep us balanced. When these elements function properly, we feel grounded, healthy, and clear-headed. However, when disrupted, this balance can create tension and illness in the body.

1. Physical body

we have a significant degree of control over it. to fully understand how we manage our physical state, we must dive into how the logical mind operates and where our reactions originate.

2. The Logical (Mental) Body: How Our Mind Mirrors a Search Engine

The logical mind is the part of us that processes information, reasons and makes decisions. The mind, much like a search engine such as how Google algorithms work, responds to the input it receives without filtering for "right" or "wrong." Consider how a Google algorithm works: if you type, “I can solve every problem,” and then search for “I am a source of solutions,” Google will focus on key terms like "problem" and "solution." It doesn’t discern the context, only picking up on the words you feed it. your mind quickly scans your internal “memory bank” for the most relevant information to help you react or make decisions quickly without thinking.

This teaches us a valuable lesson: be mindful of the words and thoughts you feed your mind. It mirrors back whatever you focus on, shaping your reality based on your internal dialogue. Choose your words carefully, as they have the power to influence your mental, emotional, and physical states.

3.. The Emotional Body

Our emotional reactions are deeply tied to our past experiences. Often, when we are triggered, it can be because of a memory of a similar experience or something we've encountered before. Being able to identify the source of our emotions helps us manage them effectively, rather than allowing them to dictate our reactions. Emotional intelligence plays a significant role in this process, helping us understand why we feel the way we do and what actions we can take to regain balance.

Understanding the Connection Between the Physical Body and the Logical Mind

Our physical body is the vessel through which we interact with the world, and in many ways, we have a significant degree of control over it. We can choose how we move, what we eat, and how we care for our health. However, the influence of the logical mind—our mental state—is profound, and it directly impacts our physical actions, reactions, and overall well-being. To fully understand how we manage our physical state, we must dive into how the logical mind operates and where our reactions originate.

The Logical Mind: How It Works

The logical mind is the part of us that processes information, reasons, and makes decisions. It functions much like a search engine, relying on past experiences and memories to form conclusions. When faced with a new challenge or situation, our logical mind doesn’t just work in isolation—it taps into a database of past experiences to guide us.

For example, when you encounter a problem, your mind searches for previous instances where you faced something similar. It’s like typing a query into Google: your mind quickly scans your internal “memory bank” for the most relevant information to help you react or make decisions.

However, the mind doesn’t inherently know whether something is right or wrong. It simply pulls from what’s available, much like how Google retrieves results without discerning context. This means that our reactions, especially emotional or physical, can often come from past experiences or stored memories—some of which we may not even be consciously aware of.

Where Do Reactions Come From?

Our reactions are not always grounded in the present moment. Often, they stem from:

  1. First Experiences: The initial way we learned to respond to a certain situation can leave a lasting imprint. For instance, if your first experience with public speaking was nerve-wracking, your mind might automatically trigger anxiety when you're faced with speaking in front of people again, even if the circumstances are entirely different.
  2. Similar Experiences: Sometimes, reactions come from memories of similar but not identical experiences. The logical mind identifies a pattern and applies the same response. For example, if you’ve dealt with confrontation at work, any challenging conversation in a professional setting might trigger the same stress response, even if the new situation is more manageable.
  3. Conditioned Responses: Over time, we develop conditioned responses to certain triggers, whether they are physical or emotional. This conditioning is reinforced by repetition. If you repeatedly experience frustration when solving a certain type of problem, your logical mind may begin to associate that task with frustration, making it your default response in similar situations.

How Our Logical Mind and Physical Body Connect

The body and mind work in harmony. While we have control over our physical actions, our mental state often influences our body’s reactions. If your mind perceives a situation as dangerous or stressful based on past experiences, your body will respond accordingly—triggering a stress response, for example, through increased heart rate, tension, or adrenaline rush.

This connection works the other way as well. Physical movement can influence your mental state. For instance, exercising releases endorphins, which can shift your mind from stress to relaxation. This demonstrates the symbiotic relationship between the two: while the mind can influence physical reactions, controlling your physical state can also positively impact your mental well-being.

The Role of Neurochemicals: Harnessing Happiness Hormones

four key neurochemicals that affect our emotional state and, consequently, our physical health: serotonin, endorphins, oxytocin, and dopamine. These chemicals not only stabilize our mood but also help reduce stress, improve sleep, and enhance our overall well-being.

1. Serotonin: The Mood Stabilizer

Serotonin helps regulate mood and promote a sense of well-being. Low serotonin levels are linked to depression and anxiety. To boost serotonin naturally, you can:

  • Get plenty of sunshine.
  • Take a walk outside.
  • Engage in cardiovascular exercises.

The simple act of getting outdoors and moving your body can increase serotonin levels, helping to stabilize mood and improve emotional health.

2. Endorphins: The Stress Reducer

Endorphins are the body's natural painkillers, released during physical activity or moments of laughter. They help reduce stress, Ways to boost endorphins include:

  • Exercising regularly.
  • Watching a comedy or spending time with someone that makes you laugh.
  • Spending time with loved ones.

Even small changes, such as burning essential oils or indulging in a piece of dark chocolate, can trigger endorphin release, leaving you feeling happier and more relaxed.

3. Oxytocin: The Bonding Hormone

Oxytocin is responsible for feelings of connection and love. It’s released when we feel close to others and helps reduce stress. To boost oxytocin:

  • Spend time with family and friends.
  • Cook a meal for loved ones.
  • Hug, hold hands, or pet your cat or dog.

These acts of bonding, even as simple as giving a hug, can increase oxytocin levels and improve both your emotional and physical health.

4. Dopamine: The Reward Chemical

Dopamine is associated with pleasure and reward. It’s released when we accomplish tasks, helping us feel more motivated and fulfilled. To increase dopamine:

  • Complete tasks, even minor ones.

The satisfaction of completing a task, no matter how small, can significantly impact your dopamine levels, boosting your mood and motivation.

The Power of Emotional Awareness

The most critical takeaway from Jemila’s insights is the importance of emotional awareness. Being able to identify where our emotions come from and what triggers them is essential for emotional intelligence. This awareness helps us manage not only our mental health but also our physical and spiritual well-being.

Understanding our triggering points—whether from past experiences, memories, or external factors—allows us to take control of our emotions. We can then take proactive steps to be conscious reactions toward our environment by balancing our mental and emotional state.
