The Impact of Consumerism on India's Youth: A Call for Mindful Spending

As I reflect on today's fast-paced world, I can't help but notice the profound impact of consumerism on our youth, particularly in India. With the rise of social media influencers and targeted ads, it's easy for young individuals to fall into the trap of impulsive buying. Youth these days usually get caught up in the cycle of consumerism. Influenced by the latest trends, they spent a significant portion of their income on designer clothes, the newest gadgets, and dining at trendy restaurants. While this lifestyle brings them temporary satisfaction, it also leads to mounting credit card debt and constant financial stress.?

This scenario is all too common. According to a survey on financial well-being conducted by Deloitte, 68% of Indian millennials admit to impulsive buying. Many young Indians prioritize wants over needs, resulting in reduced savings and long-term financial instability. The habit of chasing material possessions often shifts focus away from personal growth and community values. Moreover, this excessive consumption contributes to environmental degradation, with increased waste and resource depletion.?

A survey conducted by Stanford University found that one in every 20 people suffer from compulsive buying, and men featured in just as many numbers in the survey as did women. The only reason we don't hear about it as often is because men feel it isn't “manly” to seek help.?

To counter this, I believe in the power of mindful spending. By creating realistic budgets, focusing on value-based purchases, practicing delayed gratification, and educating ourselves on financial literacy, we can empower the youth to make informed financial decisions. This shift towards more sustainable and value-driven consumer habits can lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Let's start a conversation on how we can collectively foster a culture of mindful spending and help our youth thrive financially and personally.

That’s quite an interesting view. Credit is becoming more pervasive. Financial Literacy is need of the hour. NEP has also acknowledged and added Financial Literacy in school curriculum however the current generation of young professionals do need easy access to Financial Literacy in an interesting way to not only learn but also to apply that learning in real world.
