Individuals who operate in an untidy and disorganized workspace are more prone to undergo symptoms of depression and anxiety. This is believed to be caused by how our brains perceive our environment. Our brains consistently survey our surroundings, assessing for safety or danger cues. Therefore, when surrounded by clutter and dirt, it can activate a sense of threat, leading to escalated stress and anxiety. That's how our primitive brain works.
A messy and chaotic work environment can impede concentration and productivity. In addition, it can contribute to feelings of dissatisfaction and frustration towards one's job. Sometimes we feel there's something wrong but can't put our finger on it. Consequently, it is essential to find ways to address the issue of a dirty and dusty office environment.
Employers must emphasize the implementation of regular cleaning schedules and the usage of air filters to reduce the amount of dust and other airborne particles. In addition, encouraging employees to practice proper hygiene, such as washing their hands and covering their mouths when sneezing or coughing, may also help reduce the spread of germs and contaminants. You might think, "But we always clean our office." The question is, are you doing enough? Are you scheduling regular deep cleaning besides daily dusting and mopping?
An unclean and dusty office environment can significantly affect our mental health. Therefore, it is crucial for employers to take proactive steps towards cleanliness and to create a healthier workspace.
