The Impact of Clashing Working Styles on Team Trust

In any team, diversity of thought and approach is invaluable. Different working styles can lead to creative solutions and a more dynamic work environment. However, when these styles clash, the results can be detrimental, particularly to the foundation of trust that is essential for any team’s success.
Imagine a team where one member thrives on structure and detailed planning, while another prefers flexibility and spontaneity. Both approaches have their merits, but when combined without understanding or compromise, they can lead to frustration and conflict. The planner might see the flexible team member as disorganized, while the spontaneous worker might view the planner as rigid and stifling. Without proper communication, these perceptions can quickly escalate into more serious issues.
The real damage occurs when these clashes start to erode trust. Trust is the cornerstone of effective teamwork; it’s what allows team members to rely on each other, take risks, and be open about their challenges. When team members clash over working styles, it can create an atmosphere of tension and suspicion. Instead of collaborating, team members might start working in silos, avoiding each other to sidestep conflict. This not only hampers productivity but also damages the team’s cohesion.
To prevent this, it’s crucial for teams to foster an environment where different working styles are understood and respected. Open communication is key. Team members need to feel safe discussing their preferred ways of working and expressing any frustrations that arise. Leaders play a vital role in facilitating these conversations and helping the team find common ground.

Building trust also involves empathy. Encouraging team members to put themselves in each other’s shoes can help them appreciate different perspectives. When trust is prioritised, even clashing working styles can become a source of strength rather than division, leading to a more resilient and united team.
I love using the Clarity 4D assessment for teams and individuals as a tool to help increase self-awareness and reduce judgement whilst increasing curiosity about working styles and approaches. Many clashes can become great collaborations if we can understand our working styles and lead with curiosity and appreciation for diversity of thought.
