Impact of AI on education

Impact of AI on education

It is estimated that ChatGPT has a staggering 100 million users, and the AI language receives about 1.8 billion users each month according to "Number of ChatGPT Users (2023) (explodingtopics.com)" with more than 60% of these users being between the ages of 18-35. This is the general age range for tertiary students.

The big question with this information and stats available to us, we have to pose the question how will AI impact education? how does this new technology impact how we learn?

The current form of education was established in the 19th century and since then very little has changed. However, during the 2020 Covid19 pandemic, online learning and exams has increased. This in return can lead to increase in cheating during exams. So, to resolve should students return to writing in class exam or what is the alternative to this.

In my personal opinion online schooling and exams is a steer in the right direction for education in the current digital age and rather than to eradicate online schooling or exams we should looks at alternatives such as more application-based exams with the exam being based on providing practical solutions to real life problems that allows students to work with AI and look to find solutions to these problems.

This will allow for students to work on critical thinking and problem solving instead of repeating certain information that will be discarded after leaving tertiary education. With this format exams will be based on students' ability to resolve problems and in practicality there will be no wrong answers.

This in my opinion will cultivate a better "thinking" society

It is well established that we are in the age of information and with all the information available to us it is very hard to source what is relevant and most reliable, same goes when you at a restaurant and there is plethora of choices available, this makes deciding on the right choice even harder even there is a sufficient number of choices available.

AI and model language platforms which scans and analyses this plethora of information and with that partnering with AI to assist with making and sourcing the right information which otherwise would be much harder without AI model language tools.

This form of learning of will allow for students to focus on specialized skills or knowledge with this when a student enters an institute it would not need to go through several modules but rather work on AI on a good base of knowledge and each individual could work on being a specialist in a certain domain or field instead of having a general idea of a few things. Student will develop the depth of a specific subject and all their focus can go into this specific task and at the end could be practically prepared for life after varsity.

These are just some ways I believe AI can be integrated into the education system. Please share your opinion in the comments.
