IMO urges us to join the campaign for a fairer future for seafarers

The IMO (International Maritime Organisation) has stated that this year’s 2021 Day of the Seafarer theme is “fairer future for seafarers.”

What does this mean?

During the pandemic, many seafarers either lost their jobs or became stranded and have worked beyond their contracted time at sea. They now face problems such as financial worries and not being able to see their loved ones.

On the back of these issues, the IMO want to show that seafarers may still face these issues, even post-pandemic.

Leading up to the Day of the Seafarer on the 25th of June, seafarers will be invited by the IMO to answer questions on what they think a fair future for them looks like. 'The answers will be shared afterwards and will provide a sounding board to help guide our actions in addressing seafarers moving forward,' said the IMO.

All those in the maritime industry are being encouraged to join in the campaign online by using the hashtag #FarerFutureForSeafarers in order to show their support and voice their opinions on what a more positive future for seafarers will look like.
