Immunity & Nutrition
The primary function of your immune system is to differentiate between normal and abnormal cells, or indeed host and foreign cells. When your immune system is working well it protects your body from harmful substances and the many different organisms which can cause disease, and as such is critically important to your general health and wellbeing.
If your immune system is out of balance this can have a severely negative affect on your health and wellbeing. Infection risks are high when your immune system is underperforming, and there are a multitude of autoimmune diseases which can result from an overperforming immune system, whereby your immune system accidentally attacks your own body rather than protect it, or in the case of allergens your immune system can overreact to particles which are usually harmless.
Nutrition and diet, as well as rest and regular exercise, play a vital role in the healthy functioning of our immune system. Many of us find it difficult to prepare and consume a daily diet which contains all the nutrients required for maintaining a healthy immune system. Therefore, supplementing our diet with essential vitamins and minerals can help ensure the continuation of normal immune function.
Some important compounds for ensuring a balanced immune system include:
· Antioxidants such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Beta-carotene.
· B Vitamins such as B5, B6, B8 and B12
· Vitamin D
· Essential fatty acids such as Omega-3
· Minerals such as Copper, Iron and Zinc
· Herbal medicines such as Echinacea, Ginseng and Garlic.
Several studies have shown that investing in workplace nutrition can benefit both employers and employees, and with the experience of the Covid-19 pandemic fresh in our minds we should all try to protect ourselves as best we can.
