Immigration updates for Malaysia
Introduction of ePasses to replace physical passes
On 17th March 2023, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) implemented ePasses, which replace the physical sticker on passports. The implementation only applies to EP and the related Dependent Pass (DP) renewals, as well as Long-Term Social Visit Pass (LTSVP) renewals, where the applicant holds the same passport. Be aware that ePasses have been in place for companies registered with the Expatriate Services Division (ESD) since 1st December 2022. Any new pass applications will still be processed via the old method, i.e. the physical passport sticker method.

K2 welcomes this change as it means that a physical passport will no longer be required for most renewal applications.
JTKSM registration required to apply for passes
As of 1st February 2023, employers registered with MDEC must obtain an approval letter or proof of submission of registration with the Department of Labour Peninsular Malaysia (JTKSM). Without this, employers will not be able to apply for quota under MDEC. As yet, nothing has been announced re. companies operating under ESD, but the above requirement may be introduced over the coming weeks or months.

Autogate facilities at KLIA and KLIA2
Visitors from ten countries, including those holding Singaporean, UK and US passports, are now able to use the autogate facilities at KLIA and KLIA2. Long-term pass holders such as EP, DP and LTSV can already use the autogate facilities at KLIA and KLIA2. For visitors to benefit from the use of the autogate facilities, they must submit a declaration prior to entry, plus enrol at the manual counter upon their first visit.
