Welcome to our weekly news updates – we bring you the latest updates on noteworthy developments shaping the UK's legal landscape. In the highlights are three captivating stories that will undoubtedly pique your interest.
In a recent development, the UK government has announced new immigration restrictions that will impact foreign postgraduate students on non-research courses. Under these new rules, these students will no longer be able to bring their family members to the UK. This decision comes, just two days ahead of the anticipated release of official statistics that are expected to reveal a record-breaking 700,000 legal migrations to the country this year. It is worth noting that the number of visas granted to dependents of foreign students skyrocketed to 135,788 last year, which is almost nine times higher than the figure reported in 2019.
In a significant move, the UK government has introduced the British Nationality (Regularisation of Past Practice) Bill. This bill aims to resolve the confusion that arose following the Roehrig judgment in the High Court. Specifically, it aims to clarify British nationality status of children born in the UK between 1983 and 1 October 2000 to EU national parents.
The introduction of this Bill is a crucial step towards providing much-needed clarity and certainty regarding the nationality rights of individuals falling within the specified period.?
The Roehrig judgment had caused ambiguity and uncertainty, which the government seeks to address through this legislative action. By doing so, the authorities hope to alleviate concerns and ensure a fair and consistent approach to the British nationality status of the affected individuals.
Some positive developments for the Fishing Sector. Starting this summer, share fishermen, trawler skippers, and experienced deckhands on large fishing vessels have reason to celebrate. They will benefit from reduced fees and salary requirements, thanks to recent regulatory changes. These adjustments aim to enable the fishing sector to access necessary talent pool whilst simultaneously reducing costs.

This move is expected to attract skilled and experienced individuals to the sector, facilitating its development and further strengthening its position in the UK economy.
