As someone who has spent years in HR tech, I’ve seen many innovations, but few have excited me as much as immersive learning, particularly for soft skills training. Coupled with the rapid developments in the field of AI, we are currently living in incredibly exciting times with new opportunities for the HR department.
This year, the excitement reached a new level. In March, we acquired Talespin (now Cornerstone Immerse), a company I’ve admired for years for their visionary approach to immersive learning. Before the acquisition, Talespin was a partner, and from day one, I was a huge fan of how they leveraged virtual reality (VR) to make learning truly hands-on, especially in areas like communication and leadership.v
Now, more than six months into the acquisition, I can confidently say that immersive learning?is transforming?soft skills training?in a revolutionary way. It’s not just about having cool tech — it’s about delivering real business results and giving employees the tools they need to grow. Personally, I took many of the courses and learned a lot from it.
The Importance of Immersive Learning in Soft Skills Training
Soft skills — like communication, leadership, empathy, and problem-solving — are the foundation of today’s workplace. These skills aren’t just nice to have; they’re critical for managing teams, resolving conflicts, and building lasting relationships with clients. But they’re also incredibly difficult to teach through traditional methods.
That’s why immersive learning is so exciting. With virtual reality, we’re able to immerse employees in lifelike scenarios where they can engage with real-world challenges, making the experience far more memorable and impactful than traditional methods.
What I love about our approach is how it leverages VR to create a deep sense of presence, where learners’ brains treat the experience as if it were real. This leads to better retention of skills and makes the training more engaging and meaningful for employees. The feedback we’ve received since introducing immersive learning has been overwhelmingly positive—employees feel more connected to the material, and their ability to apply these skills in their daily work has noticeably improved.
The Business Case for Immersive Learning
The business value of immersive learning is clear, and this has been one of the most exciting parts of our journey with Talespin. Immersive learning provides tangible, measurable benefits for organisations:
Tackling the Challenges: How to Scale Immersive Learning
While the benefits of immersive learning are clear, many organisations ask an important question: How can we scale this technology effectively? Is it all about investing in expensive hardware, or are there other ways to make immersive learning more accessible and impactful?
1. Hardware is Becoming More Affordable
One common concern about scaling immersive learning is the cost of hardware. Historically, VR headsets and related equipment were expensive, making it hard for organisations to deploy this technology at scale. However, the good news is that hardware is getting cheaper and more advanced. I highly recommend looking at the latest announcements from Meta and other VR manufacturers who are driving prices down while improving the quality and accessibility of their devices.
This cost reduction makes immersive learning more viable for organisations of all sizes. As the technology evolves, the hardware barrier is rapidly shrinking.
2. Hardware Isn’t Always Necessary
Even more exciting is that immersive learning doesn’t always require expensive hardware. Many of the VR and augmented reality experiences we offer, including through Cornerstone Immerse, can be accessed directly on a computer or laptop. This means employees can engage in immersive training without needing a dedicated headset.
This flexibility allows organisations to roll out immersive learning at scale, leveraging their existing hardware. Whether using a VR headset for a fully immersive experience or simply participating through a computer, companies have multiple options for delivering impactful training to their teams.
3. The Impact is in the Content
It’s not just about the hardware (even though we know that everyone is excited in the hardware) — it’s about the content and how you can use immersive learning to tackle specific business needs. Any dialogue-based interaction can be transformed into an immersive learning experience. Whether it’s training employees on sales pitches, consulting approaches, or customer service scenarios, the possibilities are virtually endless.
One of the things I’m particularly excited about is the AI-powered content authoring we offer. This means that our clients can build customised, highly specific training scenarios tailored to their exact requirements. For example, if a company needs to train their sales team on handling objections during a pitch, they can create an immersive experience where employees practice this exact scenario repeatedly, with real-time feedback powered by AI.
This custom content creation makes immersive learning incredibly versatile and ensures that training aligns perfectly with each company’s unique challenges and goals.
Why Scaling Immersive Learning Matters
Scaling immersive learning isn’t just about adding more hardware — it’s about creating high-impact, scalable solutions that can be deployed across an organisation. By using flexible platforms that don’t require VR headsets, organisations can make immersive learning accessible to everyone, from frontline employees to executives.
Additionally, the ability to create custom AI-driven training scenarios means that companies can continuously evolve their learning programs to meet changing business needs. This ensures that training is always relevant, targeted, and effective.
Real-World Application: How We’re Using Cornerstone Immerse
Over the last six months, I have taken many courses around some of the most challenging soft skills employees face — things like handling difficult conversations, providing constructive feedback, and navigating conflict resolution. One thing I’ve noticed is how much more confident I feel after just one or two sessions in VR.
For example, there is one scenario in which a manager has to navigate a tough feedback session with an underperforming team member. By using VR, you can practice this scenario repeatedly, learning from your mistakes without the stress of real-world consequences. The instant feedback you receive helps to fine-tune your approach.
Immersive Learning is More Accessible Than Ever
While the journey to implementing immersive learning may seem challenging, the technology is becoming more accessible and affordable. Whether through cost-effective hardware, flexible computer-based solutions, or customisable AI-powered training content, organisations can now scale immersive learning in ways that weren’t possible just a few years ago.
From my experience working with Cornerstone Immerse, I’ve seen how this flexibility allows companies to deliver tailored training programs that make a real difference. As the hardware becomes cheaper and the content creation tools become more powerful, immersive learning is set to become a key part of any organisation’s learning and development strategy.

5 个月Virtual reality is, indeed, a game-changer for training soft skills because it can closely mimic real-world scenarios while maintaining control over the environment. This controlled setup allows for high ecological validity, meaning the skills learned in VR can easily translate to real-life situations. By simulating realistic interactions, yet keeping variables in check, VR provides a unique blend of immersion and reliability, making it an ideal tool for effective and scalable soft skills training.
