The Immersion of MT into AI

Written by John Tinsley , Translated .

Over the past years, MT gurus have been featured on the stage at TAUS events consistently to talk about the latest developments in the world of machine translation. The TAUS Massively Multilingual AI Conference in Albuquerque, NM is just around the corner, and while AI seems to be the focus of attention these days, machine translation is still an unmissable topic. But are they one and the same thing?

“The Immersion of MT into AI” - as the title of this session suggests, it appears that machine translation is slowly but surely being subsumed into the newly popularized world of artificial intelligence. So much so that it’s frequently referred to now as AI Translation.

This is somewhat paradoxical, however, as the underlying technology that powers today’s Neural MT is very similar to the technology that underpins Large Language Models. MT is already AI!

That said, there’s no doubt that we’re at the cusp of another paradigm shift in MT that is likely to have much further reaching implications than those that have come before.

But why? What is it about this new generative approach that makes it that much better? And what impact is it going to have on MT developers, users, and the localisation industry and beyond?

To answer these questions, we have brought together a stellar panel of experts in the area of machine translation and artificial intelligence who have deep expertise not only on the research and scientific side, but also from a product and commercial perspective.?

The panel, hosted by John Tinsley ( Translated ), will feature Jaroslaw (Jarek) Kutylowski ( DeepL ), Orhan Firat ( 谷歌 ), Philipp Koehn ( The Johns Hopkins University ) and John DeNero ( LILT ) who will share their knowledge, experiences, and thoughts on this exciting topic.?
