Immers-ify and Experience the XR Future

You wake up, grab your stylish XR glasses with built-in prescription, switch to AR mode and start interacting with the world, which has been recreated to appear in your vision as if it is a “digital twin.” 

Before you get out of bed, you virtually start the coffeemaker, scan your personalized news, schedule the dog walker for 10 AM and purchase groceries for the evening meal (including coffee, which was automatically added to your shopping list after this morning’s brew). But you leave your smartphone in the drawer because you seldom use it anymore.

After you get ready, you check your work schedule and see an important meeting was moved up to 30 minutes from now. No worries. You switch the XR glasses to full VR mode, which darkens the lens, select your “office” avatar and immerse into the meeting. Today’s agenda includes your brief presentation on proposed product design changes. Every teleported participant can see the design in 3D as it revolves above the virtual boardroom table. The collaboration goes smoothly. With a quick gestural nod, you log the agreed changes into your company’s dashboard, which is projected onto the table in front of you. 

Once the meeting is done, you prepare to run some errands. You select AR mode again and walk to the autonomous bus stop. While you are waiting for the bus, the walls of the stop deliver ads based on your personal data usage preferences, which you released to your favorite brands for a limited time use. An ad for running shoes catches your eye: on a whim, you configure a pair to your exact specifications and confirm your bank account transaction via a biometric eye scanner built into the glasses. The bus arrives and you pass the time onboard by watching the AR version of your favorite show, a compelling one in which you choose your own adventure and participate as an actor.

After a few more hours of work—some in full VR mode, the rest using voice commands combined with your virtual projection screen, you use an app in the XR glasses to hail a car-sharing service. It’s time to visit your mom. She has a milestone birthday soon and you’ve decided to surprise her with an XR-powered travel experience—immersion in a remote yoga training session in the mountains followed by virtual scuba diving in the tropics. She is thrilled to see you and delighted by the gift. During your visit, you switch the XR glasses into silent mode so you can give her your undivided attention. 

Back at home, your customized running shoes have arrived, and you decide to take your dog for a run outside on the “beach” complete with the salty air smell of the ocean. (It doesn’t matter that you live in a land-locked area with the nearest water hundreds of miles away.) Your XR glasses monitor your vital signs during the exercise and your personal trainer calls afterwards to provide some feedback on your technique. 

For the end of the day, you select your “social” avatar and host a virtual dinner party with friends. It’s an XR cooking party, led by a renowned chef who demonstrates how to use the ingredients you purchased that morning to make a satisfying meal. It feels good to send texts and live chat with your buddies, even though they are located around the world. 

Finally, it’s lights out. You place your XR glasses on the bedside table and sensors in the device automatically begin to play your soothing sleep playlist. Tomorrow will be another immersive day.
