Evidence Exists: The Trump Campaign Scripted These Executions

"Executions are an irresponsible political stunt, not justice for victim's families."

Terre Haute, IN - July 16, 2020: Evidence now exists to clearly suggest that the federal executions of Daniel Lee and Wesley Purkey and others to follow have been scripted by the campaign to reelect the president. Death Penalty Action will hold a press conference to address this matter today at 10:30am on the coorner across from the federal prison at SR 63 & W. Springhill Drive in Terre Haute, Indiana. The event will be live-streamed on the Facebook page of Death Penalty Action at https://www.facebook.com/deathpenaltyaction/

STATEMENT 

"According to reporting I saw in the Terre Haute Tribune-Star, the Trump campaign sent an e-blast to its supporters touting the execution as an accomplishment of the president and calling out Joe Biden to explain his opposition too the death penalty," said Abraham Bonowitz, co-director of Death Penalty Action, a national organization mobilizing opposition to federal executions. "It really doesn't matter if you are for or against the death penalty, or for or against the president, the use of presidential powers to carry out executioons for the purpose of creating campaign points is unconscionable and morally repugnant. 

"The timing of these execution dates and the insistence on going forward despite the pandemic leads us to conclude that these executions are nothing more than a political stunt intended to stoke the political base of Donald Trump as he runs for re-election. We can do better for murder victim family members, be safe from dangerous individuals and hold them accountable without wasting taxpayer dollars on a system fraught with disparity and error."

Protest Information in Terre Haute

Organizers are encouraging protesters to stay away from the official protest area provided by the Federal Bureau of Prisons because of concerns about COVID-19 and the unreasonable restrictions and time commitment placed on any individual choosing to subject themselves to that process. Protesters will instead stage a visibility action and prayerful vigil at the busy intersection closest to the prison at US 41 and W. Springhill Drive in Terre Haute starting at 3pm EDT on Friday, July 17, one hour before the scheduled 4pm execution.
