iManage integrates with Microsoft Copilot (a quick take)
iManage , one of the two dominant legal document management systems, just announced an integration with Microsoft Copilot, giving us a little more insight into how Copilot is going to change legal work.
Continuing her coverage of the integration, the amazing Caroline Hill published an interview with Neil Araujo and Shawn Misquitta which is worth checking out.
Here are my some quick takeaways for legal builders:
Retrieval refinement is key
Copilot still does the heavy AI lifting (say, generating or summarizing a contract), but iManage's role in the value chain is to focus Copilot on fewer documents in order to increase accuracy and reduce hallunications. His example was curating 10M documents in a repository down to 10,000 or so to be provided to Copilot (one-tenth of one percent).
Takeaway: Less may be more when it comes to data sets and accuracy.
Their models are homegrown
They make a point of saying that they developed their models in house and don't utilize any third-party LLMs like OpenAI.
Takeaway: Don't use OpenAI or other service unless you have to.

CLM agonistes
I love that his examples are things you'd do today in a contract management system. Ouch.
First of all, it allows you to interact with the DMS using natural language, right? So you can ask a question like ‘Can you find me the last NDA we had with Caroline Hill.’ And it will do a search and say ‘I found three NDAs, is this the one you’re looking for?’ And you can you say then ‘What is the expiry data on the latest NDA’ and it will look at the document and tell you what the expiry date is, so the user doesn’t have to go and do a search, find the document, wait for it to open, and then answer the one question they are looking for. It will be much faster.
Takeaway: Copilot may not kill contract management, but it will probably blunt the opportunity.
It's still early
Notably absent from the announcement or press was the name of any iManage client using the integration.
Takeaway: We're early in Copilot adoption.
