Imagining the future: Visiting Old?Memories

Imagining the future: Visiting Old?Memories

Talking to the dead….Hm.Isn’t that one of our many curiosities? Trying to figure out how we can reach out to the other side. We go to such lengths to talk to our loved ones just one more time. We wish we could use a time machine to return to those memories, most importantly, those people. I mean, some even use the presence of an Ouija board. I imagine a future 50 years from now where you CAN talk to the dead. Perhaps with the help of virtual reality. Thanks to all the Black Mirror episodes I binge-watched, this scenario came to my mind. Honestly, I see this technology becoming too close to becoming the norm as a handful of people have already tried their hand at this artificial technology.

For example, in the UK, a woman appeared at her funeral using AI technology built by her son, StoryFile. Sometimes the power of intense emotions can make you do incredible things. He played his mother’s video on a screen at a funeral. Though it did look like plain old multimedia, it was a digital avatar that was responding to questions asked by the relatives.?

Another example would be the Korean documentary in 2020, where they invited a mother whose 7-year-old daughter had passed away in 2016 due to an incurable disease. And sadly, the mother didn’t have a chance to say goodbye. The “Meeting You” producers created a digitized version of the child that the mother could see through a VR headset. Although the experience was extremely painful, the mother did say she would do it again if she could. Mm, I don’t think it’s mentally healthy for a mother to relive that memory one way or the other.

All of this is possible because of something called deadbots. This is the next breakthrough in artificial intelligence. These chatbots allow us to converse with the dead by imitating their responses. Their development is part of a more global context of virtualization of relationships and blurring the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds.

?Several companies have started working on this disturbing innovation all around the world. But none of them have been able to make a breakthrough in creating sustainability. Honestly, this isn’t what I thought things turn out to be when I thought holograms or AI was an exorbitant idea. Psychologists agree with the heightened damages that could be caused or manifested by this technology, and you can’t win a battle between scientific and technological perspectives.

Is this perhaps what life after death will look like? I’m sure this isn’t what we had in mind when humanity wanted an answer.

Regardless of the negative connotations of this tech, we can surely find its positive attributes. Despite it being a cool concept, think about how much potential this has for people who’ve succumbed to grief. Letting go and moving on is one of the most difficult things we have to do as a human; this might just come in handy. For instance, creating a virtual environment for those needing help processing their loss could allow them to accept reality.?

Technology has always had a negative underlining, but that depends on the users and their intention with the gadget. Such a platform or innovation breaks barriers for doing so, known as — Opus. They created a 3D generator that creates an interactive environment created by a storyline written by the user. They’ve made the process simple so anyone, especially non-tech people, can build worlds or scenarios straight from their imagination. That’s some next-level stuff! You can check out a demo of it here.

Sure, deadbots sound like a cool concept when it’s still just a Sci-Fi concept, so do we need to interrupt the natural life after the death process? The cycle of life is painful as it is. Hopefully, this is used and made with caution as it could entail a whole abundance of psychological disaster for the people who have lost their loved ones. I, for one, would keep this particular invention at a distance. Everyone is arguing about whether or not it’s ethical to do so, and I wonder who will win this argument till one of the tech giants start to take an interest in this matter.
