Imagining the future of the museum field

Imagining the future of the museum field

We often talk about wanting to create a better future for the museum field--one that captures the very best of what museums can be for society and one that ensures financial security for museums and the people who make them possible.

But to create the future we want, we have to be capable of imagining it first. This is one of the core concepts that Rob Hopkins, renowned author, climate activist, and futurist, reminds us of in his work. Can we imagine this future for our sector? And if we scale this challenge up, can we imagine a better future for our world?

Imagination seems to be increasingly in short supply, with some sources citing a growing imagination deficit. We need more imagination, curiosity, and empathy to build a brighter future for our field, communities, and society. These very things: imagination, curiosity, empathy. Where have we heard about them before? Oh, right: they are key superpowers that museums have. We all know that museums can foster these important qualities by bringing history, culture, and science to life. As imagination engines, museums may very well be key to a brighter future for our world.

On October 29, Rob Hopkins will be keynoting the Future of Museums Summit and taking us to 2030, to help us imagine a world in which we’ve not only reached the United Nations Sustainability Goals for 2030, but museums were a critical part of that rapid change. During his keynote address, Hopkins will encourage you to be bolder and more audacious—because that is what this time demands of us.

Join hundreds of your peers October 29-30 for the virtual Future of Museums Summit as we dive into some of the most pressing issues our field and society face: AI Adolescence, Culture Wars 2.0, Decarbonizing the Future, and Combating the Loneliness Crisis.
