On October 29th, we celebrate one of the most important invention in human history.
While the internet may not have been possible without a million other inventions that came before it, it’s hard to find any other invention that has had so much impact on mankind. This explains why since October 29, 2005, we’ve been celebrating the anniversary of the first internet transmission. It is a chance to celebrate the people who helped build the internet, while also giving us a moment to reflect on all the ways that it has changed our lives forever.
Long before the technology existed to actually build the internet, many scientists had already anticipated the existence of worldwide networks of information. Nikola Tesla toyed with the idea of a “world wireless system” in the early 1900s, and Paul Otlet and Vannevar Bush conceived of mechanized, searchable storage systems of books and media in the 1930s and 1940s. The first practical schematics for the internet would not arrive until the early 1960s, when MIT’s J.C.R. Licklider popularized the idea of an “Intergalactic Network” of computers.
The technology continued to grow in the 1970s after scientists Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf developed Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol, or TCP/IP, a communications model that set standards for how data could be transmitted between multiple networks. The online world then took on a more recognizable form in 1990, when computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. While it’s often confused with the internet itself, the web is actually just the most common means of accessing data online in the form of websites and hyperlinks.
The internet is the primary driver of the global economy and our primary mode of communication. Its power is almost incomprehensible. Across industries and beyond borders, the reach of the internet develops and builds businesses and personal connection.
Where would have been the advancement in digital banking today? Artificial Intelligence? How about education, medical research, etc. It looks like everything would have been snail slow or non existence without the internet.
Here are few facts about the internet and its impact:
1. There 4.9 billion users on the internet as at December 2018.
2. With the very first website starting in 1991, there are about 1.24 billion websites as of August 2017 that averages out to a growth of 47,692,307 sites each year!
3. Over 4 million blog posts are published on the Internet every day.
4. Over 500 million tweets are sent every day.
5. Over 5 billion Google searches are made every day.
6. In 2018, 281 billion emails were sent and received each day.
7. An estimated 1.92 billion people are expected to purchase something online in 2019.
Just imagine the chats, the tweets and the Instagram posts!
No matter how it transforms, and transforms us, one thing is clear: the internet has transformed the world like no other force before it, and it’s just getting started.
