Imagine a world without airplanes - Australia

Young people in schools are unaware of the breadth of amazing aviation careers all over the world – we need to show them what they’re missing.

Imagine a world without airplanes - Individuals and families would enjoy far fewer holidays, with many people never having the chance to experience other cultures or create precious memories with loved ones. Businesses would be reliant on costly and time-consuming methods of transportation, resulting in a slower and less productive economy.

Airlines and aircraft manufacturers not only build planes, they serve as catalysts for new life experiences and are an integral part of our lives.

Aircraft are highly specialized pieces of equipment. The passengers and crew depend entirely on the reliability of all aircraft parts and equipment so the engineer jobs do not only demand training, but also logical thinking and acceptance of responsibility.

The increase in the number of jetliners taken delivery by airlines, the profits in the airline industry and the growth of the new generation of aircraft has resulted in a shortage of aircraft maintenance personnel.

In commercial aviation, routes are evolving so fast that operational hubs are both expanding and globally dispersing.

In Europe and North America, major airports are supported by a wealth of qualified engineers and facilities to get aircraft back in the air as soon as possible. There are also established networks of third-party MRO providers. In other geographies, where many are experiencing rapid growth, there is no such pool of maintenance engineers in Australia.

If an airline is to expand its network or an aircraft is forced to land in remote locations, the challenges of being able to quickly return it to operational status are a lot more complex.

The solution to the aviation skills shortage lies in positioning the Aerospace & Aviation sector as an interesting and rewarding career choice that can give engineers and technicians a career like no other industry.

"In a globally connected world where students are bombarded with choices, we need to shout louder to reach potential aviation engineers and technicians or we risk losing out on talent"

In reading this article I was somewhat disappointed. I was expecting the article to discuss the huge amount of employment roles that aviation has to offer. Instead it was biased towards aviation engineers and how there are not enough engineers. I find this annoying particularly in Australia where at this point in time Engineers are struggling to find full time work, with many being relegated to casual roles or leaving the industry altogether. With the advent of new aircraft that are more efficient and designed with less maintenance required it has changed the whole framework. With the introduction of AI there will be changes going forward that will redefine the whole industry. The effects are not yet fully realised but in reality are about 3-4 years away. So I would have liked to see more about all the support roles in aviation that nobody ever talks about.
