Today is the UN’s International Day of Non-violence, a day dedicated to promoting non-violence as a means to achieve peace and sustainable ways of living and working together. When John Lennon sang “Imagine,” he envisioned a world where we could overcome debilitating conflicts that cause unnecessary suffering and hardship.
Imagine all the people, sharing all the world
In both life and the workplace, conflict is a natural part of our interactions. It arises from the diverse perspectives and opinions that each of us brings to the table. This diversity is a strength, driving innovation and new ways of delivering business value.
However, the challenge begins when we overlook the importance of inclusion and fail to see the value in others’ perspectives simply because they are different from our own.
When we start to see our own view as the only valid one, we close ourselves off to the richness that diversity offers.
To engage in healthy conflict, we need to be curious, flexible, and willing to see things from different vantage points, not just when the stakes are low, but also when they are high.
This requires emotional maturity and the ability to imagine. To Imagine a world that can be better than what it has been and what it is today.
You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one
