Imaginair - Your virtual airline.
Bjorn Gianotten
Senior Strategic Partnership Manager @ talixo | International Business Development
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome on board of Imaginair flight 501. My name is Bjorn Gianotten and I am your flight attendant today. I am here to ensure you will have an enjoyable flight experience. Please feel at home and make yourself comfortable. May I suggest you visit the Sky Kitchen and get a hot or cold beverage and a snack before take-off? There are still some very Comfortable Seats available in the Living Room. As a complimentary service we can upgrade you to the Full Size Flat Bed in the Sleeping Room. For an optimal experience all passengers are kindly requested to use their smart phones or tablets from take-off to landing. Our flight time is approximately twenty-two minutes. We expect to depart right on time. Enjoy your virtual flight!
First time? A little nervous? Don’t worry. We’ll explain some elementary facts about virtual flying before we actually take off. To begin with, virtual flying is absolutely safe. In fact it is just as a safe as being at home, as long as you follow the safety precautions. Please remain seated in one of our Comfortable Seats or lie down on one of the Full Size Flat Beds while flying virtually. Refrain from parallel activities such as virtual cycling or driving at all times as this may cause dizziness and lack of control possibly causing an accident. Please note that virtual flying times are relative and you can take breaks, even though we recommend not to. If you want to stretch your legs, we suggest you visit the Sky Kitchen. See the Food Suggestions and Extended Bar for details. Flying Imaginair is interesting, a lot of fun and, last but not least, it appears to be 100% climate neutral.
Booking, check-in and boarding
Reading this sentence means that you have already boarded one of our virtual aircraft. Is it that easy? Yes it is! Without noticing it and in a split second, you used our online booking tool, picked the only fare we have (free of charge), used our web-check-in, virtual airport transfer, security fast-lane and priority boarding. At Imaginair we carefully studied the full pre- and post-flight customer journey and simplified the process to the absolute minimum, giving your more time for the actual flight.
So, flying Imaginair is free of charge. As a consequence rebooking (new date, new route) and name changes are also free of charge. So far we have a 98% on time performance (OTP). You can also book for the remaining 2% NOTP flights. We sometimes create technical disturbances on purpose for those situations when you love to continue your stay at that lovely beach. We even have an arrangement where you will be ambushed by bandits and your camera and jewels are robbed. Before it gets really dangerous (and before getting real hungry), James Bond himself will liberate you. Our press connections will take care that your trip will be covered in your local media with representative high density photographs. By the way, our virtual insurance policy covers any inflicted damage. We never cancel any flights. In case you cancel, it is free of charge too. In the near future we consider implementing Pay as You Like, a donation-based system similar to Dana, and such funds will only be used to make virtual flying available to more people. If you feel like donating now, please choose a good cause of your choice.
Who flies Imaginair
Travelling for leisure or business, men, women, families, singles, young people, old people, mainstream or LGBT, everyone can fly Imaginair. Some flights may not be appropriate for little children though. It’s up to parents to decide if and when children can join or even fly alone. Good news for the people who are very tall or wide. Our planes are wide body and our seats are very spacious. At Imaginair we offer Extra Large Seats and Extra Full Size Flat Beds at no extra charge. We allow pets free of charge to stay with you in the cabin compartment. No matter if it’s a gold fish, hamster, parakeet, cat, dog or even a horse, your pet may board the virtual aircraft. But be aware of the Imaginair safety requirements. In the plane you have to leave the goldfish in the bowl , the dog may not enter the cockpit and when we are up in the air, don’t open the window with the parakeet on your shoulder. Sorry to mention, but most of our planes have no inside tree for the dog.
In the first few months of operation we welcomed passengers from Aruba, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Cura?ao, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kenya, Malta, Namibia, Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Panama, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Surinam, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Tunisia, UAE, UK and USA. Miss your country? Simply like, comment or share your virtual flight experience with Imaginair and we will add it to the list.
Where we fly
Imaginair’s start-up destinations include Abu Dhabi, Algeria, Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica, Cura?ao, France, Ivory Coast, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia and the USA. We are rapidly expanding and plan service to Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Chile, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy, Surinam, Sweden and Switzerland until August 2020. As you can see we do not limit ourselves to typically popular destinations, a thing we can afford to do due to our no-cost structure. Our virtual aircraft can land at major airports as well as local airstrips. All we need is a few square meters or yards really. We are constantly at the lookout for new destinations and are open to suggestions (also see the feedback section), whether it’s Capetown, Lima, Shanghai, Buxtehude, Kilombero or Ventimiglia. Destinations currently served can be found at the bottom.
All our flights are non-stop. You can board Imaginair in Tokyo and have direct service to, let’s say, Santa Teresa in Costa Rica, or start in Sydney and land directly in Tytsjerksteradiel in the Netherlands. As you can see we have left the conventional hub-and-spoke-system behind us. Connecting is still possible though. Simply de-board one virtual flight and board the next.
Fleet
In order to serve various targets and destinations on all continents, Imaginair started operation with a fleet of six virtual aircraft. They are all different. One of them, the Cormorant’ is a ‘small body plane’ with only children’s seats. The crew (one pilot and one flight attendant) are all under the age of twelve. Sorry, but no adults are allowed on those flights! Among the current destinations are Orlando, Billund, Kaatsheuvel, Brühl, and Paris. However, no other airline can beat our most secret destination. The Cormorant can land on water and continue as a submarine. Dolphins and whales can be observed up close at every trip. Last week Nemo was seen and also some mermaids. That trip made some parents rather jealous. Imaginair has twelve more planes on order to be delivered until August 2020, provided the manufacturer can supply them on time. We’d love to get ideas from our passengers regarding destination and interior of the new virtual planes. Our state-of-the-art aircraft are extremely comfortable, silent and 100% climate neutral, except for minimal use of electricity and production of waste. We plan virtual travel to the moon and beyond as early as 2021, but please, don’t tell Elon Musk.
Cabin
Imaginair’s interior cabin design is truly unique and completely tailor-made to your individual taste. Our Comfortable Seats, Full Size Flat Beds and all surrounding items are unprecedented in aviation and can be tailored to your exact ideas until the extent that you may feel more or less at home while virtually flying the world. To avoid stairs and elevators for some of our elder passengers, a growing customer group, we have chosen single deck aircraft. You will be amazed how many people fit in, while keeping more than enough individual space for each passenger. On long-distance flights we offer a space where you can do yoga and other exercises without disturbing the flight attendants. We are the first airline to offer this service. Feel free to share the configuration that you have chosen with other passengers in the comments.
Luggage
Unlike conventional airlines using the piece concept or maximum amount of kilograms, Imaginair allows unlimited checked and hand luggage. We do suggest you only take what you need and limit each suitcase to 32 kilograms / 70 pounds in order to avoid lower back problems.
Sky Kitchen and Bar
Like the interior design, Imaginairs global a-la-carte catering is one of its kind in aviation. Please enjoy the wide variety of global cuisines for breakfast, lunch or dinner and pick accompanying hot or cold beverages during the full length of your flight. Like all other products and services at Imaginair, you can take as much as you like. Please don’t overdo it however and do not waste food. We have listed some of the possibilities at the end under ‘Food Suggestions’ and ‘Extended Bar’ to give an idea of what can be served at Imaginair. These listings are by no means a complete overview. To minimize costs we work with the self-service principle, meaning you can get all dishes in the Sky Kitchen. The special design of our virtual cabin ensures that the smells of your tasteful meals and drinks will not be noticeable to your neighbour and vice versa.
Special Service Requests
At Imaginair you can bring any kind of stroller, baby or high chair, baby bed and additional equipment for your toddlers and children into the cabin compartment, meaning babies on your lap or in baby basinets are history. We can cater for unaccompanied minors (UM), but do suggest parents fly an adult route first before allowing their children to do so on their own. Of course families, no matter how big, will always be seated together.
The interior of our virtual aircraft is so spacious that you can come with any manual or electric wheelchair and simply enter the aircraft. We offer special services for blind or deaf guests, near sighted guest and elderly people, all of it free of charge.
Safety regulations
Please remain seated in one of our Comfortable Seats or lie down on one of the Full Size Flat Beds. Use of safety belts is not needed. Refrain from parallel virtual activities such as cycling or driving at all times as this may cause turbulence, dizziness or even lack of control possibly causing an accident. You can stretch your legs for a little stroll. Always make sure to drink enough referring to water obviously. Please make sure the cabin temperature is adequate and the cabin is regularly aired. If you want, you can book a seat in the dedicated smoking area, but we really suggest you don’t smoke as it’s not good for you and people around you. If you are traveling with babies or little children, keep an eye on them as the virtual flight does tend to suck up your attention. Please keep emergency exits free.
Board Magazine
The first issue of our digital board magazine ‘Imagination’ is planned come out as soon as we have the funds and people to produce it. During the start-up phase, we rather focus on launching new virtual routes and reaching more passengers.
Kids Amenity Kit
Our Kids Amenity Kits are already famous for their extensive drawing and painting materials to push creativity, arts and the right side of children’s brains and also include some nice aircraft models and cuddly toys to play with.
Virtual Frequent Flyers
Just one virtual flight entitles you to participate in ‘My Imaginair, our Virtual Frequent Flyer program. Subscribing is easy. Simply follow Imaginair’s founder and CEO Bjorn Gianotten.
Feedback & contact
We thrive on your feedback which helps us improve. We do not use phone or email, incurring unnecessary costs and absorbing time, keeping us from opening up new virtual routes. Simply leave your thoughts down here by using the comment function and we try to reply within 24 hours. We speak Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese and hope to add Arabic, Farsi, Hindi, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian, Swahili and some other languages soon. We encourage public comments as we stand behind our virtual product.
Based on the first virtual passenger’s feedback and within 24 hours after publication, we have replaced the cover image (only displaying alcoholic beverages) with an image of the cabin self-service and added an image of our favourite non-alcoholic beverage. Further we introduced FAQ and a video explaining the essentials of virtual flying.
Partners & Extras
We are still in the process of looking for additional virtual services such as virtual rail and bus providers, virtual parking, rent-a-car, hotel and travel insurance and will update this section as soon as such partners materialise. The same applies to other virtual airlines with whom we would like to elaborate setting up a future virtual alliance.
Imaginair holidays
Next to the individually focussed and extreme voyages, we want to offer virtual package holidays as soon as possible, even though Imaginair just started service. We are currently in the process of finding suitable virtual DMCs, hotels, local transportation companies and companies offering local virtual services such as sailing, hiking, surfing and yoga. Drop us a note if you are interested!
Tourism Authorities
We are open to cooperation with tourism authorities, provided the exact choice of locations and topics remains free.
Groups & MICE
Virtual flying tends to be more focussed on individuals and smaller parties, but Imaginair also caters for the virtual groups and the Meeting Incentive, Congress and Events (MICE) segment. Obviously groups also travel free of charge. We make sure all group members sit together and for bigger groups we can arrange dedicated virtual group check-in-desks. We consider offering virtual ad-hoc charters in the future. Contact us if you want to know more.
B2B / Trade partners
Unlike some other airlines, Imaginair explicitly allows indirect sales via online travel agent (OTAs), metasearch engines, (screenscraping only), TMCs, conventional travel agencies, mobile travel agents and other resellers, provided they use our booking system. Our content is not available in Global Distribution Systems (GDS) yet, but we are open to cooperation’s, but only in case we will be exempt of the applicable distribution costs. We envision the use of the airline code IM as the previous airline using it stopped service in 2002, but still need to verify regulations with the International Air Transport Association (IATA). We do not offer incentive agreements, but we do encourage use of educational trips and agent fares to get acquainted with our virtual flight product. Agents do not get a price advantage like this (we can’t make it any cheaper than free of charge) but do get a look behind the scenes. In reverse our virtual flights can be packaged with other virtual travel components. Contact us for more information.
Corporate Program
Imaginair‘s corporate program is fully tailored to business travellers needs. Departing and landing wherever and whenever you want allows for minimal travelling times and optimal flexibility. Each aircraft has its own special Corporate Entrance leading to the Office Area. Next to special Comfortable Seats there is a Corporate Bar where you can mingle with fellow business travellers. The area also has some private working corners fulfilling all your business and communication needs on the way. We do suggest you also leave your work alone for some time and enjoy the virtual aircraft, the Sky Kitchen and Bar and all other facilities. Our corporate fares are linked to public fares (saving up to 100% of regular travel expenses). Contact us any time if you are interested.
Promotion
At Imaginair we completely rely on social media and personal word-to-mouth recommendations. As such we do not use and are not interested in any form of paid advertising, unless through ourselves and in order to spread virtual travel to an even wider audience. In the start-up phase we will use slogans such as ‘Imaginair - Travel now. Dream later’, ‘Imaginair - World’s favourite virtual airline.’ and ‘Imaginair - virtually the best airline.’.
Our mission
Imaginair is the virtual airline connecting you to worldwide destinations. Thanks to its no-compromise positioning, Imaginair combines free virtual airfares with the highest quality standards. At Imaginair we focus on your virtual travel experience using state-of-the-art concepts from aviation, travel, hotel and restaurant business combined with the latest story telling techniques and visual tools. Imaginair does not require the use of expensive VR-headsets. We think virtual flying should be available to everyone, or at least to everyone who has a private or public internet connection. We have a holistic view of travel and life in general and are not linked to any organisation, political or religious movement. We expect our travellers to be polite and respectful towards other travellers, regardless of gender, age, sexual preference, nationality, race, religion or political flavour.
The environment
Our state-of-the-art aircraft are extremely comfortable, silent and 100% climate neutral, except for minimal use of electricity and some waste production (no more than staying at home though). We suggest avoiding any unnecessary use of materials for example by printing, unless you are travelling someplace that is completely without electricity and internet. We recommend you to participate in our Bring-Your-Own-Plate-Cutlery-Cup-and-Glass program.
The Team
Imaginair was founded on 1 April 2020 in Nijmegen, the Netherlands by Bjorn Gianotten, who is also author of the Corona Times. The company is 100% owned by its founder and CEO. We have no fixed employees but do cooperate (on barter base) with selected high end consultants in the field of sustainable travel, storytelling, yoga, coaching and healthy lifestyle. Imaginair virtually has no overhead costs enabling the free offer of tickets. Focussing on the essence of virtual travel and in line with our passengers, our headquarters is situated at home. We do not have global hotlines, stationary, business cards or a website and completely focus on social media. We have set up a Global Advisory Board one week after our official launch are in the process of developing a suiting company logo.

First two locations will be Café Oortjeshekken in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, home to Imaginair’s founder and CEO and Zwart Art Cafe, Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, hosted by Advisory board member Margriet Zwart.
FAQ
Q: I missed my flight due to a traffic jam. What can I do?
A: It happens to the best. Real traffic can be a pain in the ass. Good thing you can’t actually miss a virtual flight with Imaginair. You simply depart later.
Q: I fell asleep during my virtual flight and missed most of it including the arrival. What should I do?
A: Don’t worry, that’s perfectly natural. Good thing you fell asleep. It shows you enjoyed the flight, you were very tired or both. Look out of the window and check where you are? If you are still somewhere else, consider your options. Stay some more if you like what you see, fly somewhere else or simply fly home.
Q: Where do you fly?
A: You can basically fly anywhere with Imaginair. See ‘Where we fly’ for more information or check our current destinations listed at the end.
Q: I don’t like my Cabin Configuration. How can I change it?
A: Simply get rid of the old cabin and choose the one you like! Any configuration is possible. It’s a really matter of taking charge of your own virtual flight.
Q: What is your catering concept?
A: Imaginair’s Sky Kitchen and Bar offer unlimited global a-la-carte catering. Don’t overtdo it, but take as many hot and cold meals, snacks and beverages as you like, regardless of flight route and duration. We work by the Self-Service-Principle and recommend participation in our Bring-Your-Own-Plate-Cutlery-Cup-and-Glass program. See the ‘Food Suggestions’ and ‘Extended Bar’ for details.
Q: How can I recommend Imaginair to my friends and acquaintances?
A: Simply like, comment or follow Imaginair which will show up in your contacts feed or share in a personal message f.e. through LinkedIn, Facebook, WhatsApp, Mail etc.
Q: My friend(s) or acquaintance(s) can’t fly virtual because they have no electricity and/or internet? How can they fly Imaginair?
A: Virtual travel has no limits. Simply invite them to your virtual flight. If they live very remote (no electricity and/or internet) consider flying off-line, printing out or simply conveying the message verbally.
Q: What can I do if I don’t like my virtual travel companion(s)?
A: Imaginair cannot really answer that question for you. Consider flying with other virtual travel companions(s) or fly alone for a change and see how that works for you.
Q: How can Imaginair serve all continents with only six aircraft?
A: Virtual flying is rather about quality than quantity. Our aircraft allow for parallel use by many passengers without ever feeling crowded. At night, when people on other side of the globe are sleeping, for example in Australia and New Zealand, the other side can fly virtual and vice versa, but there is more to the use of our fleet. As this is the core of our business, the manufacturing process of our virtual aircraft is one of our best kept secrets, locked up in a secret virtual vault.
Q: How about Inflight Entertainment?
A: How you shape your inflight entertainment is completely up to you. There are no boundaries really. The sky is the limit.
Q: I have problems seeing the virtual flight screen.
A: Check if your screen settings are ok. If moving away from the screen improves clarity, chances are your age is somewhere between forty and fifty. Consider getting a good pair of reading glasses, ideally at an optician’s.
Q: How can I join Imaginair?
A: Anyone with an internet connection can join us. We are a no-cost airline and don’t have fixed employees. You can contribute to Imaginair by commenting and sharing your virtual flight experiences, ideas and suggestions.
Q: My question wasn’t answered here. How can you help me?
A: As the world’s first virtual, no-cost, pop-up and climate neutral airline, some things are new to us too. The FAQs evolve with your questions and feedback. Please pose your question under comments and we will answer it asap and add it to the FAQs.
