"I'm working on getting my CFP and I'm wondering your thoughts on the best way to share with my clients once completed."

Good morning Sara!

Question from a subscriber: "I'm working on getting my CFP and I'm wondering your thoughts on the best way to share with my clients once completed.?How do I tell them I can help them with so much more than I could even just 2 years ago? Specifically asking on how to communicate to current clients rather than prospective new clients."?

How would you feel if you dentist said this to you:

"Now that I got my Advanced Dentristry License (that you haven't ever heard of before), I can be extra certain that I'm drilling the holes in your teeth in the right places."

?

Take these actions TODAY:

  • Don't bother telling your clients this information.
  • Show them you know more by using what you learned to elevate your performance.

They may be happy for you but it won't necessarily translate into more respect; people judge you by how you act, not what you're called.

It's not like you won the Noble Prize; nobody outside the industry really knows what the CFP is anyways.

Has to be about THEM NOT YOU, people!

THEM NOT YOU!

ThEm NoT yOu

them not you

Yeah?

Yah.

BOOM - there ya go; today's marketing tip for ya!

Calling a client to tell them you're now certified is right out of a Jack Benny or Rodney Dangerfield bit. "I'm now certified to plan out your finances!" "What were you before? Faking it? No respect!"

Sara, I’ve followed your posts for years as a silent observer, even after I left wealth management. But this topic right here is enough for me to break silence. The CFP is a dishonest institution, masquerading as a gold standard. All proclamations of higher ethics than regulatory bodies is not only inaccurate, it’s intentional misleading of the public. Marketing itself as a must-have or you aren’t a real advisor, it intentionally seeks to misrepresent what constitutes a fiduciary. And I sincerely hope employees of the CFP organization follow you, see this comment, and know that their organization has people out there that legitimately detest its existence and hope for its downfall. The CFP is a marketing brand and is designed to exploit advisors for membership dues through manipulative marketing practices of the public. I encourage your followers to reconsider their affiliation with the organization. Thank you, have a nice day.

Sara Grillo, CFA You don’t unless the client asks or you’re already in the middle of doing some financial emotional/psychological work with the client. There is almost no upside and a lot of potential downside. If it makes sense given the existing conversation & relationship, then obviously do it. But calling your clients out of the blue to tell them this will elicit a host of reactions—many of them negative.

I disagree with your take here. Part of building relationships with clients is sharing wins - theirs and yours. "If it's alright, I'd like to share a recent accomplishment with you. As you know, I'm always working on improving my knowledge in the financial planning space, so I can continue to serve you better. Over the past couple of years, I've been working through the CFP? Certification as a part of this journey, and I wanted to share with you that I passed the comprehensive exam it requires last November."
