I'm A Sucker For Marketing!

I'm A Sucker For Marketing!

As someone IN “Marketing", I sure am a sucker FOR “Marketing".

My wife gets mildly annoyed at this behaviour. “You don’t need that... it's the same product in a different package”.

In the back of my mind - “yeah, but maybe it's even better!"

It happens more than I care to admit.

  • New shiny foil packaging? - Oooo - let's try that.
  • A new flavour of chip? I’ll try that.
  • Unique bottle shape? Let’s do it.
  • Gold-coloured golf balls? 5 dozen, please.

When I choose a bottle of wine - it’s usually about the novelty of the product?

Shiny= Oooo

Unique Shape = Ooooooo

Shiny and unique shape = Oooooooooooooo

Weird right?

Well, not so much. Cognitive Scientists have the answer.

“There is a connection between novelty and happiness,”?Dr. Laurie Santos, a cognitive scientist who teaches the wildly popular “Psychology and the Good Life” course at Yale, told me. “Novel?stimuli tend to activate regions of our brain that are associated with rewards.” There’s more than just the dopamine rush, though. “Novel things also capture our attention … you’re more likely to?notice things and be present,” Santos continued. “There’s lots of evidence that simply being more present can improve our mood and happiness.”

The article goes on to talk about other ways the "science of new" affects us.

  1. New Experience = better mood
  2. Better mood = willingness to explore
  3. Exploring = even better mood

With all those positive benefits, it got me thinking about how we can help our clients leverage the science of NEW.

Novelty is a tool for us to use.

Ever thought about what “Novelty" can do for your business??

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have 5 dozen golf balls to go lose…

Between gold golf balls and purple cows (not to mention throwing in Paltrow!) you have hit the nail on its head Carl. There is nothing wrong in being a sucker for marketing. More dopamine, better the chance of you making a marketing breakthrough

Carl, we all are influenced by some "marketing" technique. I love your question of applying this to our business. How can we promote some innovation and newness to what we do. I am still thinking about this one. Food for thought. Love it! Thanks. ??

I'll tend to err on the side of 'yeah, but maybe it's even better!' even though its not but makes me happy anyway. I'm a marketer's dream. ??

This makes sense given how short all of our attention spans are now. Shiny at least gets our attention.
