I'm a Social Strategist and Here Are 20 Things To Know About Threads

I'm a creative social media strategist and here's a summary of all the things I've jotted down and observed since the launch of Meta Threads, the popular Twitter rival.

If anyone is anything like me, before using the app I was confused about what it actually was. It's basically a Meta Twitter. A Meta thread basically = a Twitter tweet, not a Twitter thread. We don't know what a Twitter Thread is called on Meta Threads yet, the jury is still out on that one. BUT you can create a "Thread" on "Threads" Lol. Whew, make sense? And yes, it's a separate app from Instagram. Okay, let's get started. ?? ??


  1. The UX experience: Seamless and easy to use because it's extremely similar to Twitter.
  2. More character count & video details: Threads let's you include videos (up to 5 minutes long). You have up to 500 characters to write.Creating a profile is also seamless. Threads allows you to pull all of your data from IG bio and audience, and integrate it into the platform making it really easy to use, and find your people.
  3. Sharing capabilities: You can share your threads to your Instagram story. The platform will add your "thread" and a cool branded background into your IGS that then links out to your thread where followers from IG platform can find you.
  4. You can't share from your Instagram to threads (I.e. share your reels on threads directly from the platform): But you can share your threads to your IG story.
  5. The audience: Many argue that this is going to be a different (possibly more reserved experience) because the people you follow or that follow you on Twitter, may likely be different than your IG following/followers.
  6. Deleting your account: Once you've made a Threads account you cannot delete it (unless you delete your Instagram account - yikes!) ??
  7. No IG, no Threads: You cannot make a Threads account unless you have an Instagram account. Also, there is no way to toggle between Thread profiles like you can on Instagram...yet.
  8. Badge Numbers: If you go to Instagram, right below it you will find numbers under peoples bios. This is called a Thread badge. You can keep it on your profile to let your followers find you on Threads, or hide it for privacy. The number represents what number you were on the list of people to enter the app when it launched. An ticket number identifier, if you will. ???
  9. Hashtags & Search: Hashtags, search bar, and topics aren't a thing...yet. Who knows if it will be.
  10. Brand Voices (My opinion): The brands I'm seeing are NOT using it to be corporate. They're on it to be personable, and tweet like actual humans. Some of my personal favorites currently are Impact, Wendy's, Hulu, American Eagle, and Bravo.
  11. Exposure: Similar to LinkedIn, the platform allows for more exposure because it doesn't just populate the people you follow on your feed. This is a feature I really love about Threads, and I hope it stays that way.
  12. Easy follow: You can follow people by clicking on their profile picture while in feed.
  13. Asset Quality: Photo and video quality are higher on Threads than on Twitter. Galleries similar to Instagram are also available on the app! And when someone quote threads a carousel thread, you can scroll it from the QT.
  14. What's available? Pins, Polls, and GIFs aren't available yet. Unless you save your GIF as a video, and post the video. But RT's, quote threads, likes, thread-ing, and replies are.
  15. Mobile Only: Threads doesn't have a desktop website, so?you can only access the service via iOS or Android apps. As of right now, Thread.net will take your to a QR code to download the app.
  16. Private Settings: Yes, you can still do that too. But no close friends yet.
  17. Ads: Mark himself thread replied to this question. He said, "Our approach will be the same as all our other products: make the product work well first, then see if we can get it on a clear path to 1 billion people, and only then think about monetization at that point."
  18. Likes: There's no tab to keep track of what you ?? yet, so be careful.
  19. Threads to IG: You can find people on Threads, on Instagram by going to their thread profile. At the top right corner, you'll find an Instagram icon that you can click to go to their IG.
  20. Verification: There is a verification tab, but given that people can now pay for their blue checks on Instagram, I wouldn't bank on it meaning anything.


Overall I'm loving this app. It's a breath of fresh air, a different vibe, and launches are always fun to experience early to see how people are using it. I think this app will also benefit writers, or folks that are more comfortable with posting words over pictures. It will also benefit people that want to do both but don't want super long captions on their IG stories or Instagram captions. Let's see where this takes us but for now I can honestly say I'm not mad at it. ??

I'm also excited to see where this takes the social media job market, particularly for social media managers, community managers, and copywriters.

It’s a fun platform. We’ve collectively grown about 60k+ followers on one of our media brands. Will be interesting to see how organic growth plays out over the next few weeks/month(s) once the Instagram-on-boarding process phases out
