I'm not a robot!

OPINION: In today's rapidly evolving world, understanding two key areas can significantly enhance our personal and professional lives. 1) First, be more human and less robotic; 2) Second, stand on the shoulders of robots before they stand on you (figuratively speaking!).

1) Being more human.

While some aspects of being human come naturally, others require deliberate effort. For example, we could all do better at respecting others and treating them well, especially people different to ourselves. We all have room to improve our listening skills. We could all work on our relationships.

Also, business is not an individual sport. The best teams win! Success requires both top talent and exceptional teamwork, so be a good damn human and a great team player. It’s not only about care and respect for each other, but very much about giving and receiving feedback, having healthy debates, smashing through hard problems, achieving big goals, and so on.

BUT… how to be more human? Of all the things we could do, one thing that works is asking for feedback in four steps. 1) Ask for honest and unfiltered feedback from the people you work with the most; 2) Accept what they say, 3) Turn it into action, 4) With a growth mindset, deliberately keep improving (but still being kind to yourself).

Another simple one is to close your laptop and put your smartphone away in meetings and conversations!

2) Stand on the shoulders of robots.

[Robots = technology, machines, robots, computers, smartphones and yes, AI]

This is about leveraging the power of technology to stay ahead. For better or worse, technology has fundamentally changed the world. The rapid advancement of GenAI technology is transforming our world, with more significant changes on the horizon.

So are you on the bus or off the bus? Are you keeping up with these technological advancements, or are you being left behind? Because the bus now has wings and waits for no one. No matter your role, stage of life or industry, I think it’s really important that you learn all about it.

How? According to some AI experts, traditional books may not be the best resource due to the fast pace of AI advancements, especially in GenAI. Articles, newsletters and YouTube have so far been my main sources as well as conversations with CTOs etc from time to time.

Here are some practical steps to help you understand and utilize AI effectively:

1) Step up daily use of AI to assist in getting stuff done.

Consider subscribing to ChatGPT for its powerful capabilities and practice so you can become a power user. You can have more efficient meeting notes with tools like Avoma https://www.avoma.com/ as another example.

2) Read "Fast Forward Aotearoa" by Ben Reid , focusing on AI in Chapter 6.

3) Invite technologists to discuss AI with your board and executive team.

If you do, I suggest aiming for a provocative and actionable conversation that's relevant to your business. You could also leverage the expertise that's already in your team.

4) Check out the newly announced book, "The Singularity Is Nearer: When We Merge with AI" by Ray Kurzweil.

5) Read online articles, such as these five:

6) If you’d rather watch and listen, YouTube also has a lot, such as:

7) Beyond the above, engage with your network and consult AI experts for insights.

ASKING THE AUDIENCE - how are you learning about AI and emerging tech? What assistive AI tools are you using right now that's giving you a productivity boost and/or helping you learn how to use it? Any tips and tricks??

In conclusion, deliberate effort in both areas will help you stay relevant and succeed in a fast-changing world. Good luck!

Great points! Balancing our humanity with tech advancements is crucial for navigating today's landscape. What are some ways you believe we can better integrate the two?
