I’m in my 30s; is it too late to change career?
Dannique Blake, FRSA
I support Leaders and Managers with handling HR, Recruitment, People Development conversations and executing employee lifecycle processes so you can confidently grow and scale your business.
There’s this unspoken rule that by the time you hit your 30s, you should have it all together with a lifelong job, partner, 2.4 children, advancing in your current career.?
The generalised handbook for adulting in the “right” way tells us to stay where we are, peddle forward and level up in no other lane than the one we’re currently in.?
And while some 30-somethings do enjoy this.?
For many 30-somethings, this is not entirely fulfilling.?
And so it is absolutely normal and ok not to dwell in a career that doesn’t satisfy you just because you’re over 30.?
Of course, being a rebel or disappointing your peers and parents feels scary.?
Hearing well-meaning naysayers' thoughts on “quitting” can feel like a blow, too.?
And even the idea of changing your job title or career that you’ve upheld for many years can feel like you’re no longer telling people where you stand, where you fit, or what to expect from you.?
Maybe being stuck thinking:?
is stopping you from making that change.?
But changing careers in your 30s is not only possible but will enhance your experience, keep you open to newer financial possibilities, get you to dig further into your values and live a life created by you, not for you.?
The change is the title, not who you are.?
And just like your circumstances change, so can how you live your life.?
So, today, there is no real reason for you, other than self-doubt, of course, to stay in a career that isn’t fulfilling you.?
The important thing to do is to evaluate and consider where your limiting beliefs about changing your career stem from.?
And a good place to start is by asking yourself:?
Answering these questions is the foundation for manoeuvring with less doubt and worry about changing careers.?
Now don’t worry, I’ve got you.?
You don’t have to go it alone.?

1 年Great article Dannique thank you! I don’t think it’s ever too late to change careers, especially in your 30’s. We all have skills, expertise and a range of things we enjoy doing, so seeking those things in your career is good, rather than staying on a dreary career path that you don’t enjoy. It’s good to have a plan though and a good career coach! Would highly recommend you Dannique Blake, FRSA

1 年I changed careers at 26, 43 and 52. It is certainly doable. I will say, I sometimes did so under duress, when I hit a brick wall I, frankly, should probably have seen coming. Keep 3-6 months of expenses liquid if you can, leverage your 1st _and_ 2nd level contacts, and engage in relentless learning even when you are happy in your current field.
You left corporate to start an HR business - I'll make sure you never go back
1 年Absolutely not! I have a couple of clients in their early 70's who have changed their career path and are thriving. Total respect to them! The bottom line is, we are living so much longer, I genuinely think that the biggest transitions take place in our late forty's and early fifty's.
