“I’m not looking… but what’s the role?”

You know when someone insists they’re not hungry, but then you put a plate of chips in front of them, and suddenly they just can’t resist grabbing one.?
That’s the treasury job market in a nutshell.?
Based on the data I’ve seen in our survey, 3 out of 4 treasury professionals say they’re open to new roles.??
But in my experience of the 25% who say they are NOT actively seeking a role.?
Are they actually open to another role? 90% of them are!
Yes its true that as treasury professionals they aren’t actively looking.?
They’re not sitting on LinkedIn, desperately clicking ‘Easy Apply’ at 3 AM.??
They’re busy. They’re good at what they do. They’re comfortable.?
But the second they hear about a role that’s a genuine step forward, suddenly they’re interested.?
A perfect example? I placed a Senior Treasury Manager with a client of mine in Chicago.?
I’d met him at the Windy City Summit Chicago Treasury conference many times - I knew his background, and six months ago, he casually mentioned that this might be “the year to move.”??
Nothing urgent, just a thought.?
Then, I landed the role, it was tailor-made for him. Right level, right location, right progression—the logical next step in his career.?
So I left him a voicemail:?
“Pete, I’ve got your next job.”
A week later, he was back from a work trip, slightly annoyed… not at me—at the fact that I was right. He wasn’t looking.??
But the moment he saw the job spec, he knew he had to go for it.
That’s the thing about passive candidates. They’re not searching for any job. They’re waiting for THE job.?
And here’s where most recruiters get it wrong.?
Some agencies flood the market with job listings, hoping something sticks. The problem? They don’t actually know their candidates. No real relationships, no understanding of their career goals—just an inbox full of “Hot new job opportunities!!”?
We do it differently. No shopping lists. No random job-blasting. We take the time to know our candidates, so when the right opportunity comes along, we already know who needs to hear about it.?
