“I’m infinitely curious.” How staying curious supercharged Mark Cuban’s path

On The Path , I chat with some of the most influential leaders in the world exploring the successes, missteps, and pivots that shaped their professional paths. It’s through these authentic stories that we can learn how to navigate our own career journeys. The Path is now available as a podcast! Take a listen now .

For the first episode of my new podcast, we wanted to start off with a bang. So, for a debut guest, who better than Mark Cuban ? We all know Mark as one of America’s most successful entrepreneurs. But before he was on “Shark Tank” and owned the Dallas Mavericks , Mark’s path was like a squiggly line packed with pivots. Mark sold stamps door-to-door and gave disco lessons as a kid. As a scrappy business school student, Mark ran a makeshift college bar and later dabbled in banking. Then he became a self-taught tech guru and a streaming industry pioneer, striking gold with internet radio company Broadcast.com , before he launched a successful pharmaceutical start-up.

Through it all, there’s been one common thread that’s paved Mark’s path: his curiosity.

“I think what I do that probably possibly separates me is I’m infinitely curious,” Mark told me. “There's nothing I'm not interested in learning about, so, number one is, you know, learn.”

Mark is always learning — and it’s clear his insatiable thirst for knowledge has driven his wildly successful career.?

“You don't have to have all the answers. It's not the end all be all,” Mark said. "And if you're curious, if you're learning, if you're agile, you'll go to the next job or start your next company and figure out where to go, and that'll lead you to the next. Then eventually you'll get where you need to go.”

So, how can you adopt Mark’s mindset in your own career? We asked digital transformation and leadership expert and New York Times best-selling author, Charlene Li .

“The thing that struck me about Mark's story is that he was never satisfied,” Charlene said. “He was the agitator, the risk-taker, but he was always curious about how things could be done differently. He had this sense of agency. Nobody gave it to him. Nobody was empowering him. He came in absolutely believing in his own agency and his own power.”

Listen to the full episode of my new podcast to hear more from Mark and Charlene. But here are some of the most valuable takeaways from our conversation:

  • Stay curious. Curiosity can help unlock a new career path, like it did for Mark. “I’m infinitely curious,” Mark says. “There's nothing I'm not interested in learning about.” Mark became a business titan by always learning. Remember, curiosity — and continuous learning — fuels innovation, adaptability, and personal growth.
  • Practice taking initiative. Mark quit his job at Mellon Bank after just 9 months, because they didn't like the initiative he was taking. Not everyone will appreciate your new ideas — but you should keep coming up with them anyway. Keep taking initiative. Once you make it a habit, you’ll be ready to think big when the opportunity presents itself.?
  • Success isn’t always about money. If you can start each day smiling and excited about what you do everyday, “you’re a success", Mark says. “Success is setting a goal and being able to wake up every morning feeling really good about what you've accomplished.”

I remain curious in hopes of collaborating with you in film and television. Based on your successful book," How To Win In Sports Business", my client has a similar book that will educate, encourage and entertain the globe. She's a Dallas native. Please advise.

Mr.Mark Cuban's success story is a lesson to the upcoming younger generation and the younger generation has to follow his mantra "Curiosity to learn new things daily".Great Entrepreneur!

The first paragraph of this post really resonates with me. I have changed the direction that my working life has taken many times. One of the key takeaways is that you seize or create opportunities that others don’t think of. And I agree with Mark Cuban, that it comes down to curiosity. And in my case, passion. Passion for what I do and how I spend my time. Have an awesome day everybody.

Mr Roslansky. Now for the fourth time in six months your technical team has restricted my LI account for no reason. I can not launch any campaigns and have to explain to my social media clients; that I for the fourth time can not run their campaigns they have paid for due to the incompetency of your company. I get told via email that there is restrictions on my account and that my bank has placed a hold on my credit card account from your company. Low and behold: when your incompetent staff actually wake up they realize as per the three previous mistakes they made - that the fault is on their side and that there was a technical issue and that there is nothing wrong or no holds on my card. My card does not even have bank holding capabilities. Then I get apology emails and they say it won't happen again.... It is now happening for the fourth time. Is LinkedIn not a professional, weight carrying platform? Not if this is the incompetency I have to deal with every two to three months. Please can you get someone with a brain to sort this out permanently. Kind Regards J Kleinhaus
