Over the last few months, I have been asked to attend a few dinners where the guests are chief human resource officers. These gatherings are places where the leaders can talk openly about the biggest issues of the day when it comes to recruiting, training, and leading people. My role in these gatherings is to share some data and case studies from our book “Anxiety at Work” and then to lead a discussion about mental health in the workplace
I am always eager to hear from these experts as to what they are doing to help their people build resilience in their team members and also help those who are struggling on their teams with anxiety, depression, loneliness and a host of other issues on the mental health spectrum.
As you might imagine, mental health is becoming more top of mind for Chief Human Resource Officers as well as for all managers. The numbers tell the story. Here’s what we know:
And every HR leader perks up when they see this:
Wow! Those are pretty telling statistics that show we have a major problem on our hands when it comes to mental health.
The fact is that nine out of ten employees say they are afraid to talk about mental health to their managers and leaders because of the stigma attached to the subject. So, what are the answers? What can we do?
To summarize the conversations from more than 50 HR leaders--here are three things that can be done.
1.?? Normalize -- It’s normal to feel anxiety, it’s a human emotion.
2.?? Destigmatize -- Get rid of misconceptions and begin dialogue.
3.?? Empathize -- “I’ve felt that way” vs “I’m strong and you are weak, let me help you.” That’s pity, not empathy.
Best-in-class organizations find ways to make sure their people know about the resources available like EAP programs, and they put in place rituals for leaders and employees that help keep the conversation going.
One best practice from a Toronto-based company TravelBrands. They put these rituals in place to ensure that wellness is top of mind for their people:
I love this ritual because it becomes part of the culture and gives people something to look forward to every week. I am sure there are ways that you and your organization are looking to make sure your people know they are supported and cared for when it comes to mental health where you work. I would love to hear your best practices so we can share it through our network.
Here's the hard reality: The pandemic created a lot of uncertainty for many people. If there was one silver lining from COVID is that people started talking about their stress, anxiety and other mental health issues. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which gives us all a change to focus on this vital issue. Let’s not lose the chance to make a difference this month for the health of everyone we work with and everyone in our lives.

4 个月I work in pharmacy & aesthetic sales. In pharmacy our anxiety and depression new rx count went up in 2021-2024 don’t know the percentages exactly but it was a big jump maybe 75% increase. For most of them it was there first time being on any anxiety medications. At the same time I work in the aesthetic sector which is my biggest passion but I’ve been in healthcare (pharmacy primarily) almost 14 and decided to get 2 scripts filled at my workplace for anxiety stress that could help me slee My colleagues but they kept asking me what’s wrong etc as if they’ve never seen this before I work 3 jobs stress and anxiety are real and I’m still killing it out there but not going to be filling scripts where I work anymore. I also bet they get there scripts filled elsewhere too, I’m just too much of an open book so I didn’t think I’d be getting or hearing through others asking about what’s going on with me, stress and anxiety can be caused by a plethora of different things not just work, sickness in the family, financial stress. I think people would actually be surprised to know that even in mental care industries (that actually treat people with anxiety) are closeted about their own anxiety.

4 个月It's inspiring to see HR executives embracing a holistic approach to workplace well-being, recognizing that mental health is not just a buzzword but a fundamental aspect of employee welfare. By rewriting the rulebook on anxiety, resilience, and empathy, they are fostering a culture that prioritizes support and understanding for individuals' mental health needs. This shift represents a movement towards creating inclusive and supportive work environments where employees feel empowered to prioritize their well-being. By addressing mental health proactively, organizations can cultivate resilience, empathy, and productivity among their workforce, ultimately leading to greater success and fulfillment for all.

4 个月Thank you for the brief "best practice" rituals outline; I can be guilty of over-thinking this particular element of team engagement, and that is a great reminder that rituals can amplify the personal investments and larger campaigns. The concept of simply keeping mental health self-awareness, sensitivity, and normalcy top of mind throughout the weekly cadence is insightful. I also find it useful to frame mental health as a strong parallel to physical health; in both areas, we are all on a dynamic continuum, so just like in our physical health and wellness: - Some days our wellness is better than other days; - Wellness takes investment and patience; - Some elements are under our control, while others not; - We all have different baselines and unique areas of strength and struggle. The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority supports a program called "Mental Health First Aid", which is largely offered to teachers, healthcare professionals, social workers, and first responders, but is also a great resource for leaders looking to leverage, rather than eliminate, the humanity of their teams. Thank you again for the insightful and hopeful article!
