I'm gonna need you to...
review some resumes please...how many?...1,500
I clicked on a job posting this morning, it said "no longer accepting applications"...Why you ask??
I'm guessing because it had over 1,500 applications.
How long does it take you to read a 300 page book? Between everything else I've got going on, it takes me a lot longer than I'd like.
But lets assume you sat down with nothing to do but read resumes.
Avg resume length = 2 pages
Avg words per page = 500
1,545 applications x 2 pages (avg resume length) = 3,090 resume pages
500 words (per resume page) x 3,090 (number of resume pages) = 1,545,000 words
1,545,000 words / 325 (avg reading words per minute) = 4,754 minutes
Converted to hours = 80 hours
80 hours / 40 hour work week = almost 2 weeks to read all of these resumes - and that's just the resumes - that doesn't include the form you probably also made the person fill out

Hiring Managers
Do you have two weeks to set aside everything else and read resumes? Does someone on your team? I hope the answer to that question is no. If it's yes, and I'm your boss, you've got extra capacity available or no?
Candidates
Are you wondering why you're not hearing back yet?
For the average posting, per Forbes, 118 people apply to each open job, so going through the same calculation, that's 236 pages, which takes 6 hours to read if you aren't doing anything else.
And here's the real problem
I used to work at a place that posted jobs, and you'd post a new position for a client, and see an application come in, and after the first one????
Stop what you're doing, run to your computer!!! Check the application...dud - And by dud I mean it's a Controller position and the person flips burgers.
Next application?? another bad dud
Next??? worse dud
Guess what happens when the next application comes in, and the next, and the next from 118 to 15 hundred. Most people don't even look anymore. So even if you are good, as the hiring manager you're going "I'm getting crap", and the candidate is saying "why aren't those idiots calling me"...
Meanwhile - hiring manager has stopped looking at the resumes because the first 25 they looked at weren't even close to being qualified and the candidate has done literally zero other than hit the apply button.
Seeing the disconnect here?
1/2 I've seen a lot of comments on here asking about solutions and apologies on the delay, but I tell candidates that the job search process is like a pie – as in, there should be multiple parts to your search - one might be job postings, a second might be your network, a third could be headhunters, and so on. There are pros and cons to all of them, but the goal is a broad approach and covering all your bases.

2 年Great article. I wonder if we're better off just sending a video pitch with key highlights in less than 60 seconds. Kind of like the "Shark Tank" pitch with some funny catch to it. We consume everything else in videos, why not our marketing pitch for a new job.

2 年Oh man - the easy button for applicants, make it challenging for hiring teams. (Yes, there is software to help them sift through but human detail is still critical!) You have to stand out and do something outside of the typical click apply and wait. I really love that there have been some awesome stories on LinkedIn of people going WAY beyond with a resume printed on a cake, or recording an original song. Be unique & show value.
