I'm Giving Up My Photography Career

I'm giving up my photography career.

There. I said it.

Is that what you wanted to hear? Is that what all my well meaning friends want to hear? Is that what all the people who don't wish me well want to hear?

Look, I understand how much you care. I understand that you think a consistent 9-5 job is way more stable for long-term living, good for rent, good for life stability and good for me mentally, but you also need to realize that this is my life, and it's my dreams.

You know who else had dreams? Walt Disney had dreams. He was fired from the Kansas City Star because his editor felt he “lacked imagination and had no good ideas.”

Walt formed his first animation company in Kansas City in 1921 and made a deal with a distribution company in which he would ship them his cartoons in New York and get paid six months later.

Unsurprisingly, he was forced to dissolve his company because he could not pay his rent and was (reportedly) surviving on dog food.

Needless to say, he went on to be nominated for 59 Academy Awards and is the great animator of our time.

There are countless stories of those who failed at first, then succeeded, and I know you understand that, but your concern for me is: "What if you don't succeed... then what?"

I understand that, but I need you to realize that by your doubting me, it in turn makes me doubt myself. Makes me doubt that I have what it takes to achieve my goals.

It's better to support someone and if they have a failing that you be there for them during their low lows, just as you're the first one to send them a "Congrats on your......" for their high highs.

Support your friends small businesses, don't ask for discounts. You don't go to Apple and ask for a discount. You pay full price for the Iphone X. Why not want to support your friend and pay full $$ to help their business flourish.

I appreciate you, I appreciate your concern, but I'd rather fall down 1000x times failing at my dreams, than succeed and win 1,000,000x times at working to help fulfil the dreams of others.

So unto my next photoshoot...

Hopefully it is a blessing in disguise. Hard to find the time, inspiration and energy for personal? work while maintaining a business

I did but not by choice. I was planning to continue but there’s no work . If it returns I’ll be happy to do it again but I followed my career dreams for 39 years. I’m in a new job and I’m happier to not run my own company anymore . Now I get steady work and I don’t drive the business; I’m the passenger . Now I do photography for pleasure and art .

You had me for a moment... so glad to hear there was a happy ending. Being strong is hard work but don't let anyone else's insecurities stick onto you. Repel those pieces of shit
