I'm Giving It All Away For Free

Welcome to this week's edition of "Your Mindset To Millions", where we discuss how to monetize your expertise through book publishing, speaking, programs, and entrepreneurship.

In 2018, I gave away everything I knew for free in a lead magnet.

Why? Because I knew it would convert into business.

People don't pay you for what you know; they pay you for implementation and insights.?

It worked. The lead magnet + referrals built me a 6-figure business. No marketing spend. No heavy-duty social media posting.

So, now I am doing that again.?

My "WHY"

When done right, a book is the fastest way to monetize your expertise and create an abundance of opportunities like:

  • Business leads
  • Subject matter expert status
  • Speaking, panel & podcasting spots
  • Coaching & consulting
  • Marketing for higher ticket offers & programs
  • More time for family; less time hunting business

This is possible with a strategically written and positioned book that builds your ideal audience, and it is something no one teaches you.

They teach you to quickly write some dumb-down book that reads like a sales brochure. Or they tell you to spend time marketing on social media, Amazon ads, reader blogs, and other tactics meant for fiction authors (or people with time to sell 1-to-1).

I don’t believe in either of these practices.?

  • I know with absolute certainty you can write a book worthy of sitting on your favorite Barnes & Noble shelf … because it’s that good.
  • I know you can sell many books without a social media following … most executives do not spend much time on TikTok, Instagram, or Facebook.?
  • I know you can leverage a book to create massive opportunities … whether directly from the book or by repurposing it into other programs.

Ten years ago, I was that person seeking information about how to write and market a book. I tried everything and made several mistakes. And eventually, I learned the following:

  1. How to write a book based on traditional publishing standards
  2. How to strategically position my book like a visionary.
  3. How to sell my book like a top sales executive.

Writing a book is exciting and a great accomplishment, but it is only the first step. You must spread the word and get your book into the marketplace.

If you Google how to launch and market your book, you receive a lot of advice that requires a huge exchange of your time and/or money to sell books 1-to-1. In my opinion, this is dangerous advice because the results won’t outweigh your costs. There are three key components to creating leverage with your expertise:

??Writing a book people care about.

??Creating multiple revenue sources

??Building raving fans for your superpowers

Now, we talk about you and identify what you want. I have built businesses both ways . . .? solopreneur and BIG.?

Until 2022, I had a highly profitable and low-overhead business through WoosterMedia. It was a successful one-person operation with a handful of contractors.?

  1. I spent 90% of my time operating within my area of expertise.
  2. I worked with my ideal audience.
  3. It was 99% referral-based.
  4. I controlled my schedule.
  5. I made a hefty 6-figure income with part-time hours.

And then I messed it up. I thought bigger meant better, so I set WoosterMedia aside (weekends only) and started a software company.?

And partners. Investors. And employees.??

In this case, bigger meant working long hours, experiencing stress, and spending less time doing what I do best.?

?? It was a two-year mistake that cost me personally and professionally.

In March 2024, I made the best decision when I said goodbye to that “bigger, better” plan and returned to what I love most: helping amazing people share their expertise with the world. And in this last section, I share how my partner Wendi Weiss and I are building this new company.
