I’m From A Non-Computer Science Background. Can I Be A Successful Software Developer?
The short answer to this question is “YES.”
Our current students at Seven Academy come from different backgrounds. That’s why I can confidently say “YES.”
In Dr. Philippe Gervais’ words,
It’s not an obstacle that you’re not coming from a computer science background. It’s rather an advantage.
He says so because he does not come from a computer science background. He was a physicist who has made a career in software development at Google.
And it’s not just him.
He has a colleague who has been a medical doctor for years who is now an expert software engineer. Even a female jet fighter pilot who codes today.
During our visit to Cameroon, Dr. Gervais said,
Everyone at Google has a secret superpower.
I agree with him.
And there are stories like these everywhere. Lizz Eggleston wrote, “From Humanities to Coding.”
So, it does not matter what you studied before now. Sciences, social sciences, liberal arts, technical education, commercial education.
You can write clean code. Especially if you are in an environment that was designed for newcomers like you.
Here at Seven Academy, our instructors will help you with basic computer science principles:
- Data structures
- Introduction to functional programming
- A deeper dive into OOP
- Understanding program execution in terms of stacks and ques, basic algorithms.
If you've never been formally introduced to these principles, these classes will be a kind of mini-boot camp to prepare your brain for a Full-stack web development training.

4 年I have my B.Sc in Geology, taught myself software engineering and now work as a software engineer. Never got into a computer science program or even a boot camp. It’s a hard journey but definitely possible
