I'm excited
Tom Kaczmarek
Former Director Graduate Studies and DIrector of Center for Cyber Security Awareness and Cyber Defense at Marquette University
I am always excited to see students demonstrate leadership. Recently I announced a cyber competition to students in the MS in Computing program.
One of the new students in our program has taken up the responsibility to create and register a team for the competition. What I find particularly interesting and something even more exciting is the makeup of the team. Because the MS program features career change and career enhancement students blended together in classes, the team reflects that blend. Students are learning from each other and getting an opportunity to be organizational and technical leaders.?
I believe this is building the sort of "soft skills" we hear so much about and which when I was a hiring manager and an executive in a large commercial company I sought. Students need to understand the value of these sorts of opportunities and take up the challenge when it is presented.?Employers need to look for these sorts of experiences on resumes or in interviews.?
Another point of interest in this is that one?of the senior faculty members agreed to serve as the coach of this team.?This reflects what I think makes Marquette special, accessibility of the faculty. Faculty are actively engaged with students outside of teaching duties because they care. "Cura Personalis" is what we call it.
This is the kind of thing that keeps me going in my second career
