Followers, impressions and likes are exciting metrics. They indicate popularity and reach. It is good to grow these. They also lead to instant gratification - nice for any marketer. But engagement is the only important measure. Here’s why:
Engagement matters because we are engaging right now. How are you? I hope you are well. I have written this, and you are reading.
Here I am writing a few simple words, and we are engaging. I wrote this on my phone, during a summer heatwave in a small town in the UK. You could be anywhere in the world. In any time-zone, doing anything right now. The internet is really quite amazing isn't it?

You and I have been able to connect in this small but meaningful way. Think of all the ways you could build engagement with the folks you want to with just a simple short note. No gimmicks, just text.

The connection you and I have right now is engagement. It is more important than followers or impressions. The connection we have here is more memorable, will last longer and be more fulfilling than instant gratification.

6 年I love this. We’ve all been guilty of throwing about words like “engagement” without really considering what it means. You explained it though the act of getting me to engage. Clever, short, obvious (like all the best ideas). And I’m still reading… and engaging… a year and a half after you wrote it.
