The truth is, we all are. Some of us sooner than others. In light of recent celebrity, political and familial funerals that I have witnessed, this article is an important one.
The topic of death is one that we do not like to have too much dialogue. Sure, we all know it is one of the two things in life that are inevitable, but beyond that we don't give it much thought.
The brevity of life itself should spur us to action. It should propel us to engage in activities that are meaningful and those that impact others positively. It should allow us to be more grateful of family, appreciative of opportunity, and useful to society. For me, the brevity of life screams to release grudges, to let go of resentment, and really treat others even better than I want to be treated (NIV).
Finally, the brevity of life also makes me realize that I must embrace my purpose and work hard to get out this message about mindset. You see, I have already lived over half of my life (statistically). And all of the 2nd half is not promised. Therefore, while I am in the 3rd quarter, it is definitely time for me to run up the score in an effort to impact as many lives as possible.
The truth is that each day we are one step closer to the grave and tomorrow is not promised. Therefore, it is important to ask ourselves regularly, “what are you doing today to leave a positive mark on this planet, in this country, in your neighborhood, in your circle?”
"The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take that first step, keep with the problem, or determined to carry out their dream." ~Les Brown

1 年After 48 years Steve died. My questions were the ones we are not supposed to ask. "Why?" "Who am I now?" "Why am I still here?" ? My faith was shaken. Answers came in an unlikely time and place, Ft. Myers, Florida after the hurricane. I decided to go and volunteer as a Christian aid worker distributing food, clothing, and praying with people. ? In temporary housing some women cared for their in-home-hospice husbands. I delivered the food and invited them to the tent services. Pointing to their husbands in bed, they couldn't leave. ? As a widow and familiar with their path, I asked if they would like to pray. With tears in their eyes, they nodded. I started crying. We prayed for God's grace, mercy, strength and purpose. After prayer they looked up with a smile. ? It was a very humbling and life changing experience. As I walked to the next home, I thought, I would not have been here to pray, if Steve hadn't died. ? I don't like that Steve's earthly life is over. But, one day I will see him again. Today is God's gift with a purpose. Ask Him for someone you can encourage. There are no coincidences. Remember those you love and take care of yourself for them. When you are gone their life will never be the same. Sharon Pikul

1 年Peter A. James, PhD this quote sticks with me. I am not sure who said it: "we are all walking toward death backward, it would be better if we turned around."

1 年You know what? That pretty tree amid the graveyard is a reminder that death is not an ugly experience. It is a transition experience, just as birth is. Life and death will always co-exist.

1 年Agreed! I feel the same way about the urgency of making this time of my life uber-productive and impactful. I am a licensed insurance agent and do a lot of will preparations (the financial biz is what drove me to TV, and then that took over). I have the life expectancy conversation all the time. I have a healthy appreciation for the value of time; in my world, time is exponentially more valuable than money.
