I'm back.... (#010)

I'm back.... (#010)

Welcome to the Not Just CAD! newsletter here on LinkedIn!

The Not Just CAD! newsletter primarily talks about AutoCAD and Revit, and, sometimes, not just CAD, hence the name. CAD is often quite dry subject matter, so expect a bit of CAD-related humour (or Not Just CAD-related humour) along the way!

As a LinkedIn [in]structor and an Autodesk Certified Instructor (ACI), it’s always good to pass on my AutoCAD and Revit expertise to you through my courses in the LinkedIn Learning library. I’ll mention a few links to my courses, featuring one a week, and I’ll also feature one of my AutoCAD Tips & Tricks too. There will also be new stuff going on out there in the world of CAD!

I’m back (finally)….

Yes, I am back. Finally! Life has been interesting as of late. My family and I have had a lot to deal with, primarily trying to find a new home. The situation is still ongoing, but suffice to say, I will NEVER rent another property again. We are now between homes, so social media has not been on my priority list, but things are slowly improving. Plus, I count my blessings. Some manufacturers have been kind enough to provide me with gear to review and blog about. The lovely people at AMD and 3Dconnexion are some of those manufacturers.

Life changes can REALLY affect your work, your psyche, and how you feel in general. Sometimes, just take a step back, assess, and do what’s important to YOU. To maintain a great balance, I often use the phrase, “Work will ALWAYS be there. Life won’t”. Moving house is a big life change, and I have had to step back and assess. I’ve also had to run around finding storage for all our worldly goods and find short-term accommodation due to delays in the admin of our house move. It’s a ride I won’t be rushing to get on again, but at the end of it, life (and work) will still be there, so embrace the change, and work hard at making it the best change you can.

AMD – Unboxing the new GPUs

The lovely people at AMD have always been good to me, and as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for their superb graphics kit, they have kindly sent me over a couple of their latest GPUs, the AMD Radeon PRO W6600 and W6800. I have not only written a tech spec blog about them, but I even recorded a brief unboxing video too!

Check it all out below: -

3dconnexion – The new Keyboard Pro and Numpad Pro

The lovely people at 3Dconnexion have always sent me high quality CAD gear to test and review, and as an Ambassador for them, they have kindly sent me over the new Keyboard Pro and Numpad Pro to check out.

Autodesk University 2021 (AU2021)

AU2021 was again virtual this year. I had the honour of presenting two AU classes about AutoCAD and its associated apps. I have to say that this year’s event was hosted on a superb platform that allowed for excellent Q&A sessions after each of my classes. I also had the privilege of having the wonderful Melanie Stone as my Q&A moderator. Another great AU and thank you to all in the Autodesk AU team who made for such an excellent annual event.

You can find my AU2021 classes on the AU website, using the links below: -

NPR - Lynda.com: Lynda Weinman and Bruce Heavin

LinkedIn Learning was Lynda.com in a previous life. Lynda.com was created by Lynda Weinman and her husband, Bruce Heavin. I stumbled upon this great NPR podcast called ‘How I Built This’ with Guy Raz. It’s a most informative podcast and gives you a fascinating insight into their lives and how they created Lynda.com, starting in the early days, all the way up to the $1.5billion acquisition by LinkedIn.

You will find the link to the podcast HERE.

Check it out. It’s worth a listen!

AEC Magazine – Prisoner of Vendor

Growing up in a certain time, I became a fan of some eclectic TV shows, including The Prisoner, starring Patrick McGoohan as ‘Number 6’. Set in an amazing (real) place called Portmeirion in Wales, UK, the TV show was based in a fictional location called ‘The Village’ where ‘Number 6’ was imprisoned against his will and that’s where the analogy starts.

AEC Magazine is run by a great friend and colleague called Martyn Day. He is also a fan of The Prisoner TV show, and he has written a very incisive article about how CAD vendors are holding their customers captive by way of subscription and moving away from perpetual licences. This is a highly contentious matter in the world of CAD/BIM applications and Martyn’s superb journalistic style puts this topic across clearly and concisely.

If you are a CAD/BIM user, manager, or business owner, it’s MOST DEFINITELY worth a read.

Not Just CAD! goes live soon?

As a LinkedIn Learning [in]structor, I have the facility to broadcast using LinkedIn Live. Unfortunately, due to me and my family being in between homes right now, I have ZERO space to set up recording space, lighting, and green screens to set up any LinkedIn Live video podcasts. It sucks, as I sincerely want to get this running for all my connections and followers and get the information out there, but until I have a studio to work out of any live Not Just CAD! podcasts are on hold for the foreseeable. Sorry, folks! I’ll try to get normal service resumed as soon as possible!

Based on the polls I put out there on LinkedIn a while ago though, it seems you all see me as a TECHNOLOGIST , so (in the future) I’ll be bringing in new tech, as well as AutoCAD and Revit content. I am STILL feverishly working on content, so please keep an eye out for dates! They will happen!

Some CAD humour….

Roger Penwill is an incredible cartoonist, whose CAD cartoons have entertained me for decades. He has kindly given me permission to occasionally post one of his cartoons in the newsletter.

For those of you who know EXACTLY how much fun layer naming is in AutoCAD, this one’s for you….
